February 1st marked the beginning of an exciting venture for Producer/Director Thomas Newman as he launched an IndieGoGo campaign for his next project, Deadsville. The filmmaker is using the latest resource known as Fan Funding where by people like you and I are asked to help pay for his up coming “featurette”, by donation. After over two million votes, thirty ideas have risen to the top and been chosen as finalists for this year’s Aviva Community Fund competition. The Fund, now in its third year and created by home and auto insurer Aviva Canada, provides $1,000,000 in donations to lead, empower and support community initiatives across the country. (We here at Village Gamer had hoped to see the Youth At Risk project make it into the finals, and while it was close, the joint Abbotsford Police and Fire Department program did not make the top ten medium-sized projects.) After Sun Youth’s announcement last week that they were short 2,000 toys for their holiday toy drive, Montreal’s own MEGA Brands received an urgent call from the North Pole. The “big man” himself, along with several of his Elves will make a quick trip to the MEGA Brands toy factory where they will be hard at work helping build those extra toys. Toronto’s most remarkable Holiday fundraiser, HoHoTO, takes over the Mod Club for the fourth consecutive year on Thursday, December 15, 2011. One of the largest third-party contributors to Daily Bread Food Bank, HoHoTO aims to raise over $65,000 this year, bringing total donations to more than $200,000 since the annual event launched in 2008. Four Canadian mobile game developers are taking part in 12 Indie Apps, a December fundraiser for Child’s Play and Doctors Without Borders. If you haven’t yet purchased Trainyard by Magicule, Smiles HD by Sykhronics Entertainment, Red Nova by Celsius Game Studios or Sword of Fargoal by Fargoal, now is your chance to get some great Canadian-made games and help support two great causes. It should also be noted that while Fargoal is based in Seattle, the studio’s primary dev is Ontario programmer Paul Pridham.
