Better Foreign Investment Rules Needed for Canada

Howe InstituteOttawa should transform the Investment Canada Act to create a broader, more transparent foreign investment review regime to encourage investment inflows while protecting Canadian national interests, according to a new report from the C.D. Howe Institute.  In “Reforming the Investment Canada Act: Walk More Softly, Carry a Bigger Stick,” authors Philippe Bergevin and Daniel Schwanen say that Canada should scrap the “net benefit test” that now restricts inbound foreign investment. The authors argue that such an overhaul could help reverse Canada’s declining share of global foreign direct investment, and bring Canada in line with its more open peers. Mobilicity Supports Ontario Bill 5 And Wireless Consumer Protection Laws

mobilicityMobilicity has reaffirmed its support of Ontario MPP David Orazietti’s wireless consumer protection legislation, scheduled to go into Second Reading on December 1st. Ontario’s Bill 5, originally introduced in 2010 as Bill 133, The Wireless Phone, Smart Phone and Data Service Transparency Act 2011, would require wireless carriers to provide clear disclosure of all optional and mandatory services and contract cancellation penalties, and limit contract termination fees. OMDC Leads Ontario Producers in Mission to Boost Co-Production

omdcTen of Ontario’s leading screen-based producers have just returned from an inaugural ten-day Mission to India led by the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) in partnership with Telefilm Canada.  The trade mission took delegates to Mumbai and Goa, including visits to the National Film Development Corporation’s (NFDC) Film Bazaar and the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), providing the delegates with an opportunity to forge new relationships between Ontario and Indian filmmakers and build the foundation for future collaboration between the two jurisdictions. New Collaborative Lest We Forget Workshops Announced

Orby - Remembrance DayLibrary and Archives Canada (LAC), the Canadian Urban Libraries Council and the Canadian War Museum are contributing to Remembrance Week commemorations with an expanded collaborative agreement for the delivery of Lest We Forget workshops across Canada. These workshops allow students to research primary source documents by looking through the military service files of Canadian soldiers, doctors or nurses who served in the First World War or who were killed in action in the Second World War.
