Two Vancouver Game Design Programs Recognized By The Princeton Review

mini-orbyThe Princeton Review — one of the United States’ best-known education services companies — has issued its fifth annual report naming the undergraduate and graduate schools with the best programs for students to study video game design. The University of Southern California is #1 on both the undergraduate and graduate school lists (complete list is below) in the 2014 report which names 50 programs overall — 25 undergraduate and 25 graduate — in ranked order 1 to 25. The Fine Young Capitalists Launch Women In Video Games Initiative

mini-orbyVia Press Release: In 2011 the Video Game Industry took in over $16 billion dollars, but despite women representing 45% percent of the game playing audience they directed less than 2% of the Games. In combination with the production company Autobotika, The Fine Young Capitalists, a Canadian-Colombian initiative, is running their first production round, allowing any woman to have a crack at creating a video game. TechU.me Announces New Funding For Mentorship Program

ONFEThe Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) today hosted an Apps Showcase to show off the accomplishments of high school students taking part in the TechU.me Mentor Program.  The program’s industry and education partners – IBM, Adobe, and the four local school boards – were also on hand to announce new funding for the next phase of the program. TechU.me pairs elementary and high school students with industry mentors to develop mobile apps. In building these partnerships, TechU.me transforms student creativity into fundamental skills needed in the digital age – skills that will help these students succeed in their future careers. Toronto Screenwriting Conference Announces Telefilm Canada New Voices Award Winners

toronto screenwriting conferenceThe Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) has announced the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Out of the forty-seven applicants representing nine provinces, from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories, five emerging writers have received the award; Katherine Di Marino, Elene Mekete, Lea Nakonechny, Ashley Park and Jon Wayne Brown. The fifth annual Toronto Screenwriting Conference takes place at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management on April 5 & 6, 2014. Each winner will receive a complimentary registration to the TSC as well as an exclusive lunch with representatives from Telefilm Canada, and TSC founder and president of Meridian Artists Literary Agency, Glenn Cockburn. Article Written by Penka Kouneva – When I first arrived in Hollywood in 1999, I had a PhD in Music composition, a keyboard and one connection. While that might not seem like much, it was more than I had when I moved to the United States from my home in Bulgaria nine years earlier. I was extremely passionate about scoring films and games – this is what I wanted to do for life. In retrospect, while my naiveté and idealism were laughable, they were also vital in getting me as far as I am today, because if you had told me upon my arrival 15 years ago that the first time a woman (Shirley Walker) was a Lead Orchestrator on a studio feature film was 1992, I’d have been shocked.
