Telefilm Canada has announced its support for the production of nine English-language feature films from all regions of the country through the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF). The Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) is expressing both frustration and disappointment that the Senate chose not to deal with Bill C290 – An Act to Amend the Criminal Code – Sports Betting, before rising for the summer recess. Bill C290 was already passed with all-party support in the House of Commons, and has the additional backing of nine provinces. The CGA, together with provincial lottery corporations and leaders in the Canadian Gaming industry, had hoped that the Senate would work together to approve a private members bill that would give Canadians a better option than turning to illegal bookmakers or offshore operators to place bets. Library and Archives Canada and the future Canadian Museum of History acquired the Sherbrooke Collection today, the largest and most complete collection of War of 1812 documentation ever, which has been in the Sherbrooke family exclusively for the last 200 years. The collection of books, maps, manuscripts and images from the War of 1812 era once belonged to Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, former Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia and Governor General of British North America. Wavefront, Canada’s Centre of Excellence for Wireless Commercialization and Research, has announced that it will accelerate the growth and development of wireless companies in Atlantic Canada with the support of the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). Building on four years of productive collaboration, Wavefront has entered into an agreement with IRAP that will benefit wireless entrepreneurs and firms in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. These annual reports allow Canadians to stay informed about the state of the Canadian communications industry. A new online self-help tool offered by Consumer Protection BC will offer British Columbia consumers a modern and alternative way to resolve disputes with businesses focused on making it easier and cheaper to resolve differences. Currently in the pilot stage, Consumer Protection BC developed the platform for Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) in consultation with the Ministry of Justice, which is leading and supporting dispute resolution innovations as part of its justice reform initiative. The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie, today joined Dr. Raj Bhatla, Psychiatrist-in-Chief and Chief of Staff of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (The Royal), to launch a new mobile application that will assist Veterans, personnel of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), and members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with operational stress injuries (OSIs). The app, called OSI Connect, provides information and assistance for people living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, substance abuse and other types of OSIs, as well as their family members. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, participated in today’s launch of the Government of Canada’s much-anticipated next-generation Open Data Portal, which will provide unprecedented access to government data and information. Immigration data is already the most sought information on the Open Data Portal. In fact, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has the six most downloaded datasets on the Portal. These datasets include information about Canada’s immigrants’ countries of origin, preferred immigration programs, settlement patterns as well as application inventories and processing times.
