BDC Venture Capital, one of Canada’s largest and most active venture investors, has announced that it is committing $1.5 million to 10 recent graduates of three Canadian technology accelerators, including, for the first time, two graduates of Launch36, a New Brunswick-based accelerator for Atlantic Canadian startups. Smithsonian Networks, a joint venture between Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution, and Blue Ant Media are partnering to launch Smithsonian Channelin Canada this fall. This marks Smithsonian Channel’s first expansion into an international market. The HD channel will feature an extensive assortment of exclusive content for broadcast, digital and mobile platforms. Global IT hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting announced this morning that it has achieved 100,000 downloads of its 3D Map of the Internet smartphone and tablet app, which brings to life the physical appearance of the Internet. With the app, users can view Internet service providers (ISPs), Internet exchange points, universities and other organizations through two view options – Globe and Network. The app, which is available as a free download for iOS and Android devices, also allows users to generate a trace route between where they are located and a destination node, search for where popular companies and domains are, as well as identify their current location on the map. Access to domestic violence training for police advanced today with the launch of a new online course developed to help police better protect vulnerable women and families. The new course, the second in a three-phase training program, provides an in-depth look at how police assess domestic violence risk, with a focus on victim-safety planning. This course will also help to further improve and standardize practices around inter-agency co-operation, risk assessment, bail hearings and safety planning for families.
