Most new parents feel pretty helpless and worry about their ability to protect their child from the slings and arrows the world is bound to throw at them. Clive and Daina, parents of a 4 ½ month old baby boy are no different. Like most of us, they were shocked, saddened, and deeply disturbed by the story of Amanda Todd, the girl who was driven to commit suicide when she could no longer cope with the torment of the bullies who harassed and threatened her. Air Canada has launched a contest to help name its new low-cost leisure airline that will begin service in 2013. The carrier is asking customers and travel agents to visit Air Canada’s Facebook page to submit their suggestions. Entrants become eligible to win one of three Air Canada Vacations gift certificates each valued at $1,500 towards a holiday package vacation courtesy of Air Canada Vacations. Winners will be selected from among the entries selected by Air Canada as most closely reflecting the new leisure carrier. The contest kicks off today and runs until October 21, 2012. The Royal Canadian Mint is pleased to announce the winners in the MintChip™ Developer Challenge, which began on April 4 when developers from across North America were invited to test the technology as part of the continuing research and development of MintChip™ and to determine its applicability to the current marketplace. The results of the Developer Challenge will form part of the Mint’s ongoing evaluation of possible next steps in the development of the MintChip™ technology. As part of Canada’s Financial Literacy Month starting November 1, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) today is launching a video challenge on its YouTube channel. With the theme: “How I am saving for…,” the contest challenges all Canadian youth aged between 13 and 19 (as of November 30, 2012) to submit a one- to three-minute long video showing and explaining how they are saving toward or managing their money to achieve a financial goal. Mobile game developer XMG Studio Inc., Electric Playground and The Globe and Mail have teamed up to challenge all Canadian students to compete in the largest ‘hackathon’ in Canadian developer history – the Great Canadian Appathon is a race against the clock to create the next hit mobile game in under 48 hours. Over the weekend of September 28th students will gather at more than 40 participating university and college ‘HUBS’ across Canada. The teams will work around the clock and compete for a $25,000 first place prize, $5,000 second place prize, as well as 10 category winners who will receive a special edition Xbox Halo 4 Edition, generously provided by Microsoft.
