Canada Shines Bright At MIPTV

eye on canadaToday a delegation of Canadian talent, content creators and business leaders in television and digital media will focus on the future of the industry at MIPTV 2014 in Cannes, France. MIPTV is the world’s most-established TV and digital content market and the biggest gathering of entertainment industry professionals. MIPTV will host a number of creative talents from the Canadian industry at notable events such as the MIPTV Red Carpet on Monday, April 7.

Kim Cattrall (Sex and the City), Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee, is this year’s MIPTV Media Mastermind Keynote Speaker. She will launch her new show Sensitive Skin, produced by Rhombus Media in association with Baby Cow Productions, in which she is executive producer and stars. The fireside chat will provide the successful Canadian an opportunity to share her thoughts on the future of the industry.

Shaftesbury’s State of Syn will be part of the Digital Studios Showcase where its featured star David Hewlett (Stargate SG-1) will accompany Jay Bennett, Vice-President, Digital/Creative Director at Smokebomb Entertainment, in a discussion on traditional sci-fi storytelling and the immersive digital experience.

Time Tremors (Xenophile Media) and Perfect Storm Interactive (Secret Location), both Canadian innovative digital productions are nominated for an International Digital Emmy Award, an event sponsored by the Bell Fund. Time Tremors is nominated for Best Digital Program: Children & Young People and Perfect Storm Interactive is nominated for Best Digital Program: Non-fiction.

Pierre-Mathieu Fortin, creative executive producer, for Sid Lee’s production and post-production house Jimmy Lee, will take part in a conversation and showcase brands creating original content through traditional and emerging platforms.

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Telefilm Canada are cosponsoring an International Drama Coproduction Summit where more than 60 decision makers will meet and engage in conversations about the future of international coproductions, emerging opportunities and connect with potential new partners.

The Canada Pavilion will host a Canada Matchmaking Event where Canadian producers will meet with executives from various countries, specifically France, Germany and the UK to connect with new potential partners. A networking event will also be hosted by the CMF and Telefilm to provide Canadian producers with an opportunity to meet potential partners, coproducers and buyers from other countries.

Coproduction is a key topic since Canada has official coproduction treaties with 53 partner countries around the world. The delegation at MIPTV will continue to strengthen those partnerships by participating at key events. Since 2010, a total of 80 productions (film and television) have been coproduced between Canada and an international partner.

The first edition of MIPTV’s Future of Kids TV Summit, sponsored by Canada’s Shaw Rocket Fund, will address key issues surrounding the digital disruption in creation and distribution in the children’s and youth entertainment sector.

Canadian speakers will contribute to a total of seven panels and sessions throughout the Market, placing Canada in an enviable position of providing a multitude of content to the international audiovisual community.

A key element of the Canadian presence is the Canada Pavilion, created in partnership with provincial and federal agencies as well as the private sector. This year, the Pavilion will host more than 42 Canadian companies, providing them with access to a first-class exhibition space that benefits from strong branding and an ideal location in a very busy section of the exhibition area. The pavilion was made possible thanks to the generous collaboration of a host of partners, namely the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA), Creative BC (BC Film + Media), and the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC).
