SecureKey To Demonstrate Secure Mobile Payment and Authentication Solutions at Mobile World Congress 2013
Toronto’s SecureKey Technologies Inc. has announced that, along with key technology partners including Broadcom, a California company with a BC location, that it will be demonstrating a number of mobile payment and identity applications based on its cloud-based authentication service at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, which runs from today through until February 28th.
These applications include:
- Mobile POS – secure EMV card read on smartphones and tablets
- Multifactor authentication for online banking, government, and healthcare using mobile devices with embedded secure element and NFC
- Mobile identity validation using mobile devices as secure terminals
“As a leading provider of NFC chipsets, Broadcom is pleased to showcase Mobile POS applications with SecureKey at Mobile World Congress,” said Mohamed Awad, Broadcom Director, Product Marketing, Mobile and Wireless. “Broadcom’s NFC solutions provide the advanced capability and flexibility required by OEMs to support mass market adoption of diverse applications like secure mobile payments and simplified connectivity. Through our collaboration with SecureKey, we now add authentication and mobile payment acceptance to the list of supported applications. The partnership with SecureKey is a natural next step as we continue building industry leading, highly integrated, NFC platforms for easy adoption by mobile, gaming, and consumer electronics OEMs.”
“Mobile World Congress is the perfect venue to introduce and demonstrate the strong authentication capabilities of our cloud-based authentication service for secure mobile applications, and as a preeminent supplier of mobile platform solutions, Broadcom is the ideal partner for conducting this demonstration,” said Charles Walton, CEO at SecureKey. “By providing additional strong, two-factor authentication to allow people to easily log on to all their online services in a way that is reliable and secure, we hope to solve the trust problem of federated identification.”
SecureKey’s cloud-based authentication service combines strong, device-based security with privacy-enhanced federated authentication. It provides a suite of services that allow customers to create simple, reliable, and secure authentication and payment solutions using devices and credentials people already have, enabled with the SecureKey security applet.
The SecureKey security applet is deployed as a software-only app, or may be embedded into SIM-based or embedded secure element devices in notebooks, tablets, and smartphones for additional hardware-based security. Unlike digital certificates and one-time password (OTP) generators, SecureKey’s solutions use security techniques similar to chip-and-PIN technology used in global payment networks to ensure that the device and every authentication event is secure and authentic, and protected from the device operating system.
The security applet reads Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover®, Interac®, PIV, ICAO, and other contactless card formats. It is already embedded in 3rd Generation Intel® Ultrabook™ computers with Intel Identity Protection Technology (Intel IPT). It is also available for Windows, Mac OS®, iOS, Android™ and BlackBerry® platforms, and may be embedded by developers into their apps using a software development kit (SDK), or delivered over-the-air by a trusted service manager into mobile SIM cards or embedded secure elements for hardware-based security.
