Canada Media Fund Releases New List of 31 Funded Projects

Canada Media FundThe Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today a contribution of $8.9 M to 31 projects that applied this fall in the Convergent Stream’s Aboriginal, Diverse Languages, and Francophone Minority programs.

Aboriginal Program – More than $1.3 M was distributed amongst three production companies from Manitoba and Quebec that applied to the program’s second round of funding. Of these, two projects are Children’s & Youth productions and one is Variety and Performing Arts.  For this round of funding, $1.2 M supported television production whereas $0.1 M supported digital media production.  This is added to the $4.7 M provided in this year’s first round of funding in the Aboriginal program. Since 2010, the CMF has provided more than $17 M to 52 Aboriginal production projects.

Diverse Languages Program – The CMF allotted $2.0 M to 10 projects that applied for funding from the Diverse Languages Program. Of these, one is from British Columbia, eight are from Ontario, and one is a co-production between Alberta and Yukon. Projects include television productions and digital media components in Mandarin (6), Spanish (3), and German (1).  Each project received funding for their television production and digital media component—more than $1.1 M supported television production whereas more than $0.8 M supported digital media components. Of the 10 projects, five are documentaries, three are drama, one is Children’s & Youth, and one is Variety and Performing Arts. Since 2010, the CMF has provided $4.5 M to 28 projects that applied for Diverse Languages funding.

Francophone Minority Program – The CMF contributed more than $5.6 M dollars to 18 projects that applied to the Francophone Minority Program in its second round of funding. Of the 18 supported projects, two are from British Columbia, one is from Manitoba, six are from New Brunswick, eight are from Ontario, and one is a co-production between Ontario and Quebec.  From the 18 supported projects, 18 television productions received more than $5.2 M and four digital media components received $0.3 M. In this round of funding, 13 Documentaries, one Drama, and four Variety and Performing Arts productions were supported. This second round of funding is in addition to $3.8 M provided in this year’s first round. Since its inception in 2010, the CMF has supported a total of 89 projects by providing more than $28 M to francophone minority productions.
