Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario Designates Route1 as Privacy by Design Ambassador

route1Route1 Inc. has announced that the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario has designated the Company as a Privacy by Design (PbD) Ambassador for its commitment to secure remote access and identity management, evidenced in the development and success of the MobiKEY. A security and identity management company, Route1 customers include both government and military organizations in the U.S. and Canada, as well as private sector businesses such as law firms, healthcare facilities and financial institutions.

Privacy by Design, recently included by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as one of its three recommended practices for protecting online privacy, is a framework developed by Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, to promote the philosophy of embedding privacy proactively in technology itself. MobiKEY’s core design elements mirror this philosophy as it is the only device that allows data to be accessed remotely without pulling it beyond an organization’s network, thus ensuring the user privacy and data security.

MobiKEY provides multi-factor authentication to ensure the identity of an individual attempting to remotely access data, which integrates privacy protocols for both the user and the institution.

“Now an international standard, Privacy by Design seeks to proactively embed privacy into the design specifications of information technology, accountable business practices and networked infrastructure,” said Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner. “Without question, one of the safest actions to take with regard to the mobile workforce is to keep the data within the network and not allow it to be downloaded onto a remote device. With MobiKEY, Route1 didn’t just meet a strong standard for privacy, they exceeded it.”

The MobiKEY is a breakthrough in security for both Mac OS X and Windows-based operating system users, who can now use the same data protection technology utilized by the U.S. DoD, DHS, DoE, Canada’s federal government, Coast Guard and a myriad of other government and private sector businesses. It’s a simple equation; as users leave no data footprint on the remote computer, they not only safeguard their privacy, but also mitigate any risk of cyber attack from any potential security breach.

“Route1 vehemently subscribes to Privacy by Design’s core belief that privacy assurance must become the default mode of an organization’s operation, and as such counts it a great honor to be designated a Privacy by Design Ambassador,” said Tony Busseri, CEO of Route1. “Humans are inherently fallible and errors are a simple fact of life, which is why policy alone is not enough to protect your organization. We developed the MobiKEY to specifically protect against human errors and to help organizations effectively implement their respective policies. ”
