Many Canadian organizations continue to face tough budget considerations and holiday celebrations may be a casualty at some workplaces this year. A new survey commissioned by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) reveals that nearly four-in-ten (39 per cent) of respondents aren’t having a party this year. But of those who typically do have a celebration, half (56 per cent) said they would be understanding if they found out that spending for this year’s office holiday party was being scaled back or cancelled altogether due to economic concerns. In less than a month, NASA will take a bold new step in the exploration of Planet Mars with the launch of a new rover, Curiosity. Curiosity is the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory mission and will seek to determine if the Red Planet has ever had conditions supportive of life. Scheduled to launch November 25, 2011, Curiosity will carry a Canadian-made science instrument that will enable the rover to determine the chemical composition of the rocks and soil on Mars. Shaw Communications has announced the next generation of Canada’s fastest Internet, with the launch of the nation’s first 100 Gigabit per second (Gbit/s) fibre-optic network. The network, delivered by Alcatel-Lucent, has the capability of carrying up to eighty-eight 100 Gbit/s channels over a single pair of fibres.
