Review: Donkey Kong Returns With Tropical Freeze

Nintendo CanadaReleasing today, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze returns fans to a world full of familiar challenges and rewards with new enemies and new abilities – and a reminder that in DK’s world, timing truly is everything. In fact, some levels in this latest iteration of the franchise bring a stark truism to the adage “he who hesitates is lost” because in some levels there really isn’t any time to look around. It took me more than a few lives to get through some levels, as the difficulty at times seemed to ramp up rather quickly – sometimes frustratingly so – but it’s also easy to rack up a healthy store of “back-up lives” in this game, so it’s all good. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Banana Mania Contest Ends Today

Nintendo CanadaCanadians may be eagerly waiting for a spring thaw but there’s no one going more bananas over frozen ice than Donkey Kong.  In just three days, the world’s most recognizable primate will finally learn how many bananas were frozen inside a massive block of ice buried deep in the wilderness.    Canadians have until later today, Thursday February 20, to enter the Banana Mania contest at Nintendo of Canada’s Facebook page. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Reunites Friends for a New Wii U Adventure

Today’s Nintendo Direct Highlights

Nintendo CanadaNintendo detailed major announcements for its Wii U home console and Nintendo 3DS portable system in the first Nintendo Direct of 2014. Launch dates and details for multiple games were revealed, including new characters in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and Mario Kart 8 for Wii U. Nintendo also announced specifics about the addition of Game Boy Advance games to the Wii U Virtual Console service. NES Remix 2 is also on the way, complete with a Luigi-themed surprise. And a pair of games coming to the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS – Steel Diver: Sub Wars and Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball – demonstrate unique new ways for players to acquire add-on content. CBC And Radio-Canada Partner with Frima Studio to Develop CosmoCamp Animated Series

My Top Pick Of 2013: Luigi’s Mansion – Dark Moon

Nintendo CanadaAs we head towards a new year of exciting game titles, I felt that the time has come to reveal the game that earned top spot among my favourites from 2013. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, developed by Vancouver’s Next Level Games is without any inkling of a doubt the best game I’ve put in my Nintendo 3DS to date. It literally lived in my 3DS from the day I got it until the day I had to take it out to review Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. This is one game that takes full advantage of the 3DS’ features and abilities – from beginning to end, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is incredibly detailed, drawing the player right into the mansion. Not once did I need – or want – to turn down the 3D intensity – the game environment is simply that beautiful. Read the rest of this entry »
