Founded in 2006, our Vancouver Women in Film Festival is one of only three film festivals in Canada featuring women filmmakers: the other two are Toronto’s Female Eye Film Festival, and the St John’s International Women’s Film Festival. As such, we bring filmmakers and audiences together, offering opportunities for women filmmakers in Western Canada that would not exist without us.
All films screened at VWIFF must be created by women in at least three of the key creative roles (one woman may serve in more than one role): Writer, Producer, Director, D.O.P., Lead Actor, Lead Animator / Editor, or Lead Composer. We encourage submissions featuring strong female characters and stories.
In addition to screening approximately 50 Canadian and International short and feature films (narratives, documentaries, and animation), VWIFF 2012 will include:
* The Spotlight Awards Gala™ on International Women’s Day (includes WIFT International Short Film Showcase screening) – Thursday, March 8, 2012
* Digital Media Masterclass (digital storytelling across multiple platforms) and Networking Reception – Friday, March 9, 2012
* Pitching Sessions – Friday, March 9, 2012
* Film Screenings (10 sessions) – Friday, March 9, 2012 to Sunday, March 11, 2012 – featuring a Yukon Short Film Showcase screening curated by Lulu Keating
* Networking Lunch panel presentation – Saturday, March 10, 2012 – moderated by Carol Whiteman
* Meet the Filmmaker brunch – Sunday, March 11, 2012
* Visual artists, industry exhibits, and equipment demonstrations in the theatre atrium – Friday, March 9, 2012 to Sunday, March 11, 2012
Here’s what filmmakers have to say: “Our film screened at VWIFF in 2011, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The energy and support was infectious. We are looking forward to submitting our next project for next year’s festival.”
The Vancouver Women in Film Festival celebrates these wonderful filmmakers with artists’ fees as well as cash and in-kind awards through the generous support of Legacy Filmworks, Women In the Director’s Chair (Creative Women Workshops Association), Kodak Canada, and a variety of other sponsors.
