Steampunk Exposition 3, Victoria

http://victoriasteamexpo.com/

Steampunk is the collision of history, technology, imagination, and attitude. Nineteenth-century sensibilities with impossible Jules-Verne-inspired technology. Teak-panelled computers, corsets and jetpacks, top hats and rayguns.

This year’s Victoria Steam Exposition is hosted by the magnificent 1890 mad-scientist lair of Craigdarroch Castle, a monument to the exuberance of the Victorian age. Its endless panelling, brass speaking-tubes and soaring spires with widow’s-walks lend the perfect backdrop to absinthe-inspired imaginings of time-travel and airship pirates. The show’s celebrity authors include Kaja and Phil Foglio, whose illustrative work and storytelling are legendary among comics fans and gamers.

The $50 weekend pass gives you access to the castle and its permanent collections, as well as steampunk jewelers, tinkers, corsetieres, milliners, leather and glassworkers, artisans and anachronists. Additionally there are continuous panel discussions on costuming, history, literary readings, and prop-making.

Headlining the Saturday evening event is San Francisco’s glam-noir siren Jill Tracy, who will conduct a seance communing with the spirits not of the departed, but of the castle’s nineteenth-century Steinway pianos. Burlesque dancers and gypsy folk music will intertwine with tattoo artists, brass goggles, and mad contraptions. The cabaret evening is included in the weekend price, although guests may be expected to stand given the constraints of the architecture.

Sunday features a Victorian picnic on the castle’s lawns, complete with period refreshments, entertainment, and a children’s costume contest.

Not your typical “con” or convention, Canada’s premiere steampunk event, VSE II is more intimate; a living art-show with evocative venues, and more oriented around conversation and sharing in an authentic Victorian atmosphere.

WEEKEND PASSES ARE NOW AVAILABLE! $50 each available for advance purchase now.
*Children 13 and under are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.

FRIDAY EVENING VIP RECEPTION & ABSINTHE-TASTING TICKETS ($30) are likewise available now.

* Aether Class tickets ($200) include all admissions, reserved seating, and a basket of gifts in thanks for your superior support of this illustrious event.  Available only until Dec 23rd!

* Cabaret Burlesque Tickets ($20) will be available once we officially announce our guests.  Priority sales will be offered to holders of Weekend passes and Reception attendees, so there’s no danger of selling-out for VSE III guests.

The Great Gamification Debate, Vancouver

http://greatgamificationdebate.eventbrite.ca

Ayogo presents The Great Gamification Debate (#GGD) with hot button topics and an open bar.

The Debate
Part comedy competition, part performance and part informational, this Great Gamification Debate will settle, once and for all, these burning questions: What is gamification? What is it good for? And why does it matter?

The Debaters
Come hear the two leading minds in the city go head to head about gamification.

Michael Fergusson (@fergusson)
Michael has been a fighter pilot, a terraforming engineer, and a zombie hunter, and that was just this morning! He learned to touch type by hunting sharks, and has travelled the entire Oregon Trail without getting scurvy. He also believes that playing is one of the most meaningful and productive things we can do. Michael is the innovator, business poet and mastermind behind Ayogo Games, Inc., a company that was recently named Hottest Digital Media Company in Canada of 2010 by a jury at NEXTMedia for the work they did creating mobile and social games that improve people’s health in meaningful, measurable ways.

Steve Bocska (@pugpharm)
Steve is the founding president of Pug Pharm Productions, a company offering a cutting-edge online technology solution that simultaneously delivers Gamification, Item Collection Gameplay; and Social Matchmaking features. Steve has 10 years of direct experience in the video game industry, having worked for Disney Interactive, Black Box (E.A.), and Radical Entertainment. In 2006, he became the founding President and CEO of Hothead Games, winner of the Canadian New Media Association’s award for “Most Promising New Company of 2007.”

Moderated by Joe Nickolls (@nickolls)
Joe is an Executive Producer at Microsoft/Big Park. He’s a former EA Sports Producer, Radio Guy, Record Industry Marketing guy, and last year’s Vancouver TEDx host. Known for his wit and humour, there are some people who call him the Bill Murray of Games.

The Format
· Each debater will be preinfomed of the points of debate.
· Neither debater will know which side of the point they will have to defend.
· Each debater will get 2 minutes to defend their side, and 1 minute for rebuttals.
· The loudest audience cheers will decide the winner of each point.
· At the end of five rounds a winner will be declared!
· The debate will wrap up with a 10-15 minute Q&A, where the audience will get their chance to challenge the debaters with their gamification questions.
