21 Canadian Companies Receive Over $5.2M For Innovative Projects
The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has announced a contribution of more than $5.2M in development and marketing support to innovative digital media projects as part of the first round of its 2013-2014 Experimental Stream funding. In July 2013, the CMF announced a contribution of more than $12.1M to 17 projects that received production support. Since 2010, the CMF has contributed $112.3M to 290 interactive digital media projects as part of the Experimental Stream.
Development Support – A total of 15 Canadian companies have received support totaling $3.3M for 15 projects including eight games, five interactive content platforms for websites, and two social media platforms,. The 15 companies are located in various regions of the country, – one in British Columbia, one in Nova Scotia, six in Ontario, and seven in Québec. Development Support provides funding for the conceptualization of an eligible project and/or for the development of the creative and technical elements of an eligible project and the drafting of a product proposal for business development and financing purposes.

Marketing Support – The CMF has contributed $1.9M in marketing support to six interactive digital media projects. Projects are from three regions in Canada, one from British Columbia, three from Ontario, and two from Québec. Canadians and international audiences will be able to enjoy new digital media content such as an application for social media to create cinemagraphs, an application to access smartphone functions on any device, a website for producers and broadcasters to create effective cross-platform strategies, an integrated delivery management system, an application to publish engaging interactive eBooks, and an interactive documentary application enhanced by augmented reality and geolocalized content. Marketing Support provides funding for the marketing and promotion of an eligible project such as the creation of national and international marketing campaigns, design costs, creation and market-testing of advertising, use of the Internet for promotion or transactions and more.

Burgundy Jazz is an interactive documentary application enhanced by augmented reality and geo-localized content that explores Montreal’s incredible contribution to jazz music history through the legendary musicians of Little Burgundy – the primarily black neighbourhood that was a hub of musical creativity, private clubs and speakeasies from the Jazz Age 1920s to the Golden Era of Jazz in the 1940s and 50s. Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Norman Marshall Villeneuve and Louis Metcalf are among the greats who lived or played in “Burgundy”. The project includes a rich interactive web doc, an iPhone app with augmented reality soundscapes embedded in walking tours, and an eBook that tells this amazing story through an array of rare jazz artifacts. |

Flixel is an application for social media to be used on iPhone and iPad that allows photographers to create cinemagraphs, a mostly-still photograph which contains a repeating element of motion. Creating a cinemagraph would normally take hours to create using a program like Photoshop; however, Flixel has reduced the production time down to a few seconds using innovative and patent-pending technology. First the user will capture a short two-to-six second video. On the edit screen, a translucent purple mask appears to show which areas of the cinemagraph will be still.
