Papo & Yo Debuts At E3
Papo & Yo is a 3D Puzzle-Platforming Adventure for the PlayStation® Network (PSN) developed by Montreal studio Minority Media Inc. The game is about a young boy named Quico and his best friend Monster, a huge beast with razor-sharp teeth and a very dangerous problem: an addiction to poisonous frogs. The minute Monster sees one hop by, he scarfs it down and flies into a violent, frog-induced rage where no one is safe. And yet, Quico isn’t afraid… he loves his Monster and wants to save him.
As Quico, players will build their friendship with Monster by solving puzzles together and adventuring through a magical, surrealist world. Players will need to learn to use Monster’s emotions, both good and bad, to their advantage if they want to complete their search for a cure and save their pal.
Quico, Monster and the world of Papo & Yo were inspired by the childhood of Minority’s Creative Director, Vander Caballero. Drawing on his experiences growing up in South America with an abusive, alcoholic father, Caballero, formerly Design Director at EA Montreal, aims to tell a truly authentic, personal story through Papo & Yo.
- Real Relationships – Players are working not only to complete puzzles, but to explore the complex relationship between two characters. Depending on Monster’s state, he may not help with a puzzle until he’s had a snack or a nap… and if he gets hold of a frog he can become Quico’s worst enemy.
- A Magical World – The world of Papo & Yo changes to reflect its characters’ moods. When Quico and Monster are playing, the world is bright and sunny. When Monster is enraged and Quico is in danger, the world becomes dark and ominous.
- Innovative Puzzle-solving – Quico lives in a world of imagination. To solve puzzles, players will conjure solid objects from thin air. When that’s not enough, players will need to find smart ways to have Monster help them accomplish their goals.
- A Personal Story – Papo & Yo was inspired by Creative Director Vander Caballero’s childhood in South America and his relationship with an alcoholic father.
