Business Mentoring Event Aims to Set Guinness World Record

Ontario Centre ExcellenceWhat do you get when you put 150 of the brightest business leaders in the country together in one room with 150 eager entrepreneurs in a timed networking event? The potential to accomplish the next Guinness World Records® achievement.

For the very first time, taking place as part of the Discovery 12 Conference and Showcase, the World’s Largest Business Mentoring event will be the first to set the “Most People Attending a Business Speed Networking Event – Single Venue” record. The event takes place, Monday, May 14 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building.

Facilitated by Canada’s queen of networking, Donna Messer, author, speaker and trainer for ConnectUs Communications Canada, the event will run in a speed-networking format.

In order to achieve the record, the World’s Largest Business Mentoring Event must have a minimum of 250 participants; be timed; and each participant must have a minimum of 20 distinct interactions lasting three-minutes each that will be recorded and verified on-site by an official Guinness World Records Judge.

Notable participating mentors include:

  • Sir Terry Matthews, Founder and Chairman Wesley Clover
  • Bill Tatham, CEO, NexJ Systems
  • Albert Lai, Big Viking Games
  • David Teten, Partner, ff Venture Capital
  • Rick Segal Founder, Fixmo
  • Doug Cooper, Co-Founder, Splintir

Participating protégés include Oleg Gutsol and Evgeny Tchebotarev, CEOs and Co-Founders of 500px; Alexander Rink, CEO of Gazaro; and Mohan Nadarajah, PlayLab

Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Innovation will sound the starting bell to kick off the event.

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), host of the Discovery Conference and Showcase worked with Jeremy O’Krafka, founder of MENTORnetwork a business that works with entrepreneurs serving organizations to support their mentorship programs through mentor recruitment, training, events and program management, to assist in structuring this event.

“Our hope is that this event provides a meaningful exchange for entrepreneurs and mentors,” said Dr. Tom Corr, President and CEO, Ontario Centres of Excellence. “We’ve developed three entrepreneur-focused strategies to maximize the 20 three-minute sessions including track-based matching that will stream participants into six stages of business growth. Mentors will also receive a list of protégés in advance including a business overview and three key challenges the business faces, so every second of the interaction is focused on business goals.”

Named Canada’s Best Trade Show for two year’s running (2010 and 2011), Discovery brings together the best and brightest minds in industry, academia, the investment community and government to showcase leading-edge technologies, best practices and research in the areas of clean energy, advanced health, digital media and information and communications technologies, and advanced manufacturing. The annual Conference and Showcase attracts approximately 2600 attendees and over 350 exhibitors.
