Waterfront Toronto CEO Joins Governor’s Council of i-Canada

CATAWaterfront Toronto CEO John Campbell has accepted an invitation to join the Governor’s Council of i-CANADA, announced i-CANADA Chair Bill Hutchison today. Waterfront Toronto has already signed development projects valued at more than $1.45-billion and that is just the beginning of the +$30 billion revitalization of Toronto’s Central Waterfront.

“John has been instrumental in putting together the partnerships that have launched one of the largest community revitalization projects in the world,” said Mr. Hutchison. “He will add invaluable advice on Canada’s ‘new national dream’ – the creation of an Intelligent Nation.”

“Waterfront Toronto’s approach is revitalization, not just redevelopment,” stated Mr. Campbell. “We take a truly integrated planning approach. To make sure that a project of this scale is done right, you have to ensure that you engage and listen to all the stakeholders: the three orders of government, local community members and the broader community. This collaboration is what I like about the i-CANADA program.”

i-CANADA is a non-profit program to help Canadian communities super-charge their effort to become Intelligent Communities. Taking advantage of the leverage like the shared best practices of its members, and tools that show where a community needs help, i-CANADA brings experts together to help make a difference.

“The Canadian drive to transform our cities and towns into many ‘Intelligent Communities’ is gaining headway faster and faster,” said Mr. Hutchison. “A few days ago, for example, it was announced that four Canadian cities — Saint John, Quebec, Stratford and Winnipeg — have made the list of the ‘Top 21 Intelligent Communities for 2012’. The added guidance of leaders such as John Campbell on our Council of Governors will enable i-CANADA to enhance its advice to communities across Canada and governments they seek to achieve international Intelligent Community status with the benefits of faster economic development and job growth along with renewed business and social innovation. The end-result will be Canada as an Intelligent Nation with rising rates of innovation, productivity and broadband performance. ”

Mr. Hutchison also noted that i-CANADA is hosting a conference called The New National Dream on November 16 and 17 in Windsor. The goal is to help support community leaders with a passion for creating ‘green waves of wealth’ for their cities through a transformation into ‘Intelligent Communities‘ (PDF). They are gathering in Windsor to obtain new tools, share best global ideas, pool resources, and jump-start community collaboration.

The meeting brings together the Honourable David Alward, Premier of New Brunswick and Chair of the i-CANADA Council of Governors, Mayors, dozens of Economic Development Officers, industry executives, academia, and community leaders in Health Care, First Responder, Creative Arts, Productivity, Human Resources, and other stakeholder groups.

Their collaboration is crystallizing around:

  • A unique quick Self Assessment i-CAT guide to map communities through the process of becoming more globally competitive as “Smart Cities”; it is the product of massive collaboration with industry leaders such as IBM, Intel, FunctionFour, ING DIRECT, Miller Thomson, and Rhyzome Networks.
  • The ‘Growing Millionaires’ ecosystem model from New Brunswick: “We used to be known for potatoes and fish; now New Brunswick is a showcase for digital investments and green waves of wealth.”
  • Resource matchmaking between vendors and community leaders, to match the latest methods and services with the pressing needs of community officers charged with evolving their cities.
  • Dashboards that provide at-a-glance views of a city’s systems and operations.
  • Matching the Toronto i-Waterfront Challenge of a billion-bits of data speed per second – ‘streaming IMAX’ – and what it does for healthcare, the arts, policing, city administration, and the need to keep up with the best?
  • Global and Canadian Best Practices that are planning to meet a wave of demand in w world where high-speed networking is a Fundamental Right of all citizens.

At i-CANADA’s summit,”The New National Dream”, opinion-leaders will consolidate plans for their transformation into Intelligent Communities — places where jobs grow, the environment is sustainable, and life is stimulated by the arts, media and a vibrant society.

In addition to local and national political leaders and a social media group of 1200 executives, partners for the event include TechnoMontreal, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario. It’s a great opportunity to network with like-minded key contacts.
