Watch For Emails Asking For Your Shaw Account Details
I received a very poor attempt at phishing email this morning, purporting to be from Shaw. The email did not have any Shaw logos or anything remotely official about it, but I still feel compelled to warn others about the attempt, as forewarned is forearmed. I’ve included the body of the email below; should you receive any type of email such as this – which, by the way, Shaw would never send – be sure to copy the message’s headers and then forward the entire email on to the security department at Shaw (for those emails pretending to be from Shaw) via internet.abuse -at -sjrb – dot – ca. If you do not know how to get the header information, please see this resource page on the Shaw website.
Below is an image of the email body. Note that while the Sender info states it is from Shaw Customer Centre, Shaw doesn’t send email from gmail.com. The next give-away is that this is an almost-exact copy of the old “Hotmail is closing accounts” emails that used to circulate. Then there is the poor grammar, and the remaining fact that Shaw would never send an email such as this – the company would never request this information, especially in an email. In addition to the info on Shaw’s site, you can also get further information about frauds, scams and phishing from the RCMP website and the Anti-Fraud Centre website. It’s always a good idea to check the Anti-Fraud site regularly to keep yourself informed about the latest schemes that crooks are using to steal your personal information.
