RuggedCom Launches RuggedAPE

ruggedcomRuggedCom Inc., a designer and manufacturer of industrial strength networks for mission-critical applications in harsh environments, announces the launch of a utility grade computing line module for the RuggedBackbone™ RX1500, known as RuggedAPE™ (Rugged Application Processing Engine).

RuggedAPE™ is the ideal product to increase performance and functionality of the RX1500 multi-service platform. Leveraging the built-in switching and routing capabilities of the RX1500, the RuggedAPE™ is a utility grade computing platform that plugs directly into any member of the RX1500 family and enables customers to run security, Smart Grid and other software applications on the RuggedBackbone™ device. From substation gateway, remote analytics and firewall to monitoring and control applications, the RuggedAPE™ provides the computing power and reliability needed for mission-critical applications.

“RuggedAPE™ is a game changer in the substation automation and distribution automation markets, allowing RuggedCom customers to cost effectively implement utility grade computing power into these harsh environments,” says Jim Slinowsky, Director of Marketing for RuggedCom. “However, the opportunities for this solution are not limited to utilities alone, as we are seeing strong interest in the rail and ITS markets as well.”

RuggedAPE™ is already in proof of concept trials for a number of projects including a large underground transit system in Europe. The device will be integrated within station equipment rooms to control customer information systems. Messages will then be sent out via serial or IP links to customer displays and the station’s digital voice announcers.

RuggedAPE™ is designed to the RuggedRated™ specification, which provides a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electrical surges. With an operating temperature range of -40° to +70°C (-40° to +158°F), the RuggedAPE™ can operate in extreme environments.
