Nexen Staff Go All Superman

Calgary’s Nexen Inc. has announced that at high noon on Wednesday, September 28th, staff will attempt to break the Guinness Record for the “World’s Largest Gathering of People Dressed As Superman.” The record-breaking attempt, which will be held at the Nexen Lobby and Century Gardens, will kick off the Nexen 2011 United Way “Be a Superhero” campaign in heroic style by bringing together 289 or more Nexen employees dressed as Superman.

To meet official Guinness standards, each costume must have:

  • A full body cover outfit in blue
  • Red underpants over the blue outfit
  • An S on the chest in red and yellow
  • A yellow belt
  • Red boots or full boot covers in red
  • A red cape

Nexen staff will try to better the current record of 288 participants at an event organized by the Cuchulainn Gaels Athletic Club in Omeath, County Louth, Ireland, in August 2010. An adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records will be in attendance to take the official count and verify whether a new record has been set. According to Guinness rules, all Nexen staff wearing Superman costumes must gather in an enclosed area for 10 minutes for the total to be official.

The event will raise awareness for the United Way of Calgary and Area, which is attempting to set its own record with the 2011 “Change starts here” campaign by beating last year’s campaign total of $51.7 million. Nexen has run successful United Way campaigns for more than 25 years and last year raised $1.4 million, which includes employee donations and dollar-for-dollar matching funds from Nexen. For 2011, Nexen is attempting to better last year’s total by increasing staff participation while inspiring other companies and organizations in Calgary to support the United Way!
