Build Custom Airships Out Of Anything In Windforge

snowed in studiosAs a denizen of the airborne world of Cordeus, you travel places by way of airships you build entirely from scratch. This means building a deck with whatever you can find-wood, metal, rocks or even giant animal corpses-adding engines and propellers and taking to the skies in your own custom-built vessel. But the skies are far from friendly, and enemies like pirates and krakens threaten to destroy your creations piece-by-piece until nothing but your grappling hook can save you from plummeting to your doom.  Enter Windforge, a 2D side-scrolling, independent sandbox title in the works by Ottawa-based Snowed In Studios. Until now the company has survived on contract work, contributing to AAA titles such as EA’s The Sims 3 and Eidos Interactive’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and now, for the first time, Snowed In seeks to fund its own independent title by turning to Kickstarter.
“Windforge is all about freedom: the freedom to build and destroy anything you want,” says Jean-Sylvain Sormany, president and co-founder of Snowed In Studios. “But it’s more than that for our team. A successful launch would mean the freedom to work on original projects full-time, to become producers of our own great content instead of being dependent on contracts.”

At present, the Windforge Kickstarter campaign has achieved 31% of its goal of 50,000 CAD. The success of the Kickstarter campaign would mean Snowed In could dedicate three staff members to producing content for Windforge as opposed to just one. That means more content, more polish and more original features.

As it stands, Windforge already brings new elements to the sandbox and side-scrolling genres: The flexibility of the airship building tools let you make airships and do anything with them, from adding propellers to a flying whale carcass:

to ramming the likeness of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford into a crowd of civilians:

But while Windforge never breaks the sandbox tradition of allowing the player to do whatever he or she wants, the game also features a complete storyline. If the player chooses to follow the plot, they are tasked with freeing the Cordeus livelihood from its dependence on oil, which is harvested from sky whales that are being hunted into extinction.

Windforge does not currently boast a multiplayer mode due to the resources involved with adding networking support. However, community feedback has caused the team to prioritize multiplayer as a stretch goal for the Kickstarter campaign. If successfully backed, Snowed In Studios plans to release Windforge in March 2014. Backers pledging $25 or more will have pre-release access in early December.
