Half of mobile phone users in North America today have smartphones, and that number is quickly growing. Canadian tech startup qwica interactive, a Langley-based company, is capitalizing on the rapidly emerging trend of seamless information gathering utilizing smartphones and scannable barcodes called QR codes. The qwica system simplifies the creation and management of mobile-optimized web pages for customers and provides complete solutions for long-term and outdoor applications. qwica allows users to quickly access information and interactive content—even in multiple languages—by scanning a qwica code on a bench, sign or other object with a smartphone camera. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) today offered the following statement regarding recent actions by the Competition Bureau regarding Common Short Codes. The Bureau’s actions could disrupt the text message services, such as severe weather alerts, charitable donations, flight status updates or sports scores, on which millions of Canadian consumers depend. IAB Canada has announced the results of its’ 2011 Online Ad Revenue Survey and announced the expected ad spend revenues in 2012. The IAB Canada Online Ad Revenue Survey states that Online Advertising revenues rose 16% to $2.593 billion in 2011, compared to $2.232 billion in 2010. The Survey also estimates Online Ad Revenue will increase to $2.8 billion by the end of 2012. Online Advertising revenue continues to consistently narrow Television’s lead, while pulling further ahead of Newspapers, which experienced a revenue decline of 6% last year. Electronic Arts Inc. announced today that anticipation for EA SPORTS™ FIFA 13 has reached record levels – according to EA’s internal sales data as of September 13th, 1.99 million people in 73 countries around the world downloaded and played FIFA 13 in the three days following the game’s demo launch for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and PC. This is a 29 percent increase compared to the first three days after the FIFA 12 demo last year. The data also shows that two weeks from launch, fans around the world have pre-ordered over 875,000 copies of FIFA 13—up 37 percent year over year in Europe and a 62 percent increase year over year in North America.
