dreamworksHolly Bario and Mark Sourian, Co-Presidents of Production at DreamWorks Studios announced yesterday that the studio has acquired the remake rights to the 2011 French Canadian film Starbuck. The film will be written and directed by Ken Scott and produced by André Rouleau, with Scott Mednick as executive producer. DreamWorks is planning an accelerated production schedule, targeting a start date for later this year. Casting for the comedy has already begun.

The film centers on a middle-aged man whose life is turned upside down when he learns he has fathered 533 children through sperm donation. When a few hundred of the children express an irrepressible need to meet their father, he must decide whether or not he will step up and reveal his identity.

“We were completely charmed by the story in ‘Starbuck’ and saw the potential for a commercial remake with universal appeal,” said Stacey Snider, Co-Chair and CEO of DreamWorks Studios. “We are excited to be working with the original filmmaking team of Ken Scott and André Rouleau and look forward to our collaboration on this film.”

“We are very happy to be working with Steven, Stacey and the entire DreamWorks team,” commented writer/director Ken Scott. “They are as passionate about this story as we are. We could not have a better partner.”

The original “Starbuck” was directed by Ken Scott and was written by Scott and Martin Petit. It was released in Canada in July 2011 and opened in a handful of international territories last year. It is opening in New Zealand, Spain, Belgium, France and the Netherlands over the next several months. The film has won many awards throughout the world, including audience awards at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and the Sonoma International Film Festival.
