Great Places in Canada [1]After months of nominating and voting for their favourite locations, Canadians today learned whether their top pick made it to the final round. More than 200,000 votes were received in the second Great Places in Canada [1] contest. From a field of 90 nominations, an expert panel of professional planners has now short-listed 21.

“The public’s response to this contest has been amazing. It’s obvious that Canadians are fiercely proud of their streets, neighbourhoods and public spaces, and they want their favourite location to be named one of this country’s great places,” said Andrea Gabor, President of the Canadian Institute of Planners [2] (CIP) which hosts the competition.

A judging panel will now select the winners. Canada’s Great Places, along with the People’s Choice awards, will be announced at the end of April.

CIP would like to thank VIA Rail, Mountain Equipment Co-op, up! magazine, Roots and the Canadian Urban Institute for their generous sponsorship.
