Canadian Government Supports Canadian Book Publishers

Government of Canada [1]Four Canadian book publishers will continue offering a rich selection of Canadian-authored books to readers everywhere, in both digital and print formats, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada. This was announced today by the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Regional Minister for Manitoba, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

Portage & Main Press [2], Fernwood Publishing [3], Great Plains Publications [4], and Turnstone Press [5] will receive financial support to ensure that readers everywhere continue to have access to talented Canadian authors.

“Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in our economy,” said Minister Moore. “By supporting these publishers, our Government is delivering on its commitment to create jobs and support our arts, culture, and heritage in Canada.”

“Organizations such as these publishers ensure Canadians can access quality Canadian content and discover new voices,” said Minister Toews. “Our Government is proud to support them.”

“Portage & Main Press relies on the Canada Book Fund to help it innovate, compete, and produce unique Canadian content in a challenging marketplace,” said Catherine Gerbasi, Publisher. “Thank you, Canada Book Fund!”

The Government of Canada has provided funding to the following publishers through the Support for Publishers [6] stream of the Canada Book Fund [7] (CBF):

The main objective of the CBF is to ensure access to a diverse range of Canadian-authored books in Canada and abroad. The Fund seeks to achieve this objective by fostering a strong Canadian book industry that publishes and markets Canadian-authored books.
