Sheridan to build major new campus in Mississauga

Sheridan CollegeBrampton Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning’s top-priority capital project has received significant funding from the federal and provincial governments. Together both levels of government are providing a combined $31.23 million in new infrastructure dollars toward building a college campus in Mississauga. The creation of Sheridan’s third major campus will mean that Mississauga, Canada’s sixth-largest city, will finally have a college.

“Thanks to the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario, Sheridan is going to be able to fill a big need for students and businesses in Mississauga,” said Dr. Robert Turner, President and CEO, Sheridan Institute. “The Mississauga area is home to over 55 corporate head offices in finance, insurance, real estate, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and logistics. Everyone has told Sheridan a college presence is essential to fulfilling their workforce needs. Thanks to this new funding, we’re going to be able to pay big dividends to the Mississauga community.”

“This investment in Sheridan will provide a significant short-term economic stimulus to Mississauga and will create jobs right here in Peel,” said Bob Dechert, M.P. for Mississauga-Erindale. “Our government is investing in innovation to create jobs, to help our economy recover quickly and to
improve the quality of life for Canadians.”

“This is great news for Mississauga and the entire region,” said Amrit Mangat, M.P.P. for Mississauga-Brampton South. “By investing in Sheridan today, the Ontario government is supporting new construction and renovation projects which will create construction jobs in the short-term and provide more opportunities for our students to develop the skills they need for the jobs of the future.”

Sheridan’s Mississauga campus will be a state-of-the-art, post-secondary institution with two main concentrations: business education and programs to accelerate the movement of new Canadians into the workforce.

“From in-demand business programs, to academic upgrading and worker retraining, the Sheridan Mississauga campus has been designed to meet the specific needs of the Mississauga and Peel communities,” added Turner. This first phase of Sheridan’s Mississauga campus will also serve as anchor and catalyst for the City of Mississauga’s bold new strategic vision that would see its downtown core transformed and revitalized.”

In particular, the Sheridan Mississauga campus will help solve the Greater Toronto Area’s skills shortage and provide a range of services and programming that will help foreign-trained professionals find good jobs.

This has been a particularly challenging problem for Ontario and specifically for the Greater Toronto Area. The large and diverse community of foreign-trained professionals who need additional training in order to work in their chosen fields will be among the first to benefit. Working in close
partnership with industry, Sheridan’s Mississauga campus will be the springboard to deliver flexible, customized skills training and bridge programs to allow new Canadians to be more fully integrated in the economy.
