As those of you who follow us on Twitter will be well aware, DigiBC hosted a town hall meeting Tuesday night for the BC game development community. It was encouraging to see such an excellent turnout for the event, and kudos to Whitney and Carly for putting the event together. The evening featured a panel of local creative devs with Lance Davis taking on the role of moderator. Opening remarks for the evening were presented by Rick Griffiths, Audit and Assurance Group partner with PwC. I will touch on only a few of the highlights from the evening, simply because the conversation moved quite quickly and because we did tape the event. Amazon Canada Fulfillment Services (ACFS) has announced plans to locate a new fulfillment centre in Delta, creating more than 100 new full-time jobs. This 200,000 square foot facility is the company’s first on the West Coast and second fulfillment centre location in Canada, bringing its total Canadian footprint to more than 700,000 square feet. Canada’s two top consumer electronics retailers, Best Buy Canada and Future Shop are seeking talented people to fill new roles supporting their IT strategies. Exponential growth in the IT area has been driven by the company’s in-sourcing of key strategic roles, while rapidly expanding technology solutions to better serve customers and employees. Sheridan College, one of the world’s leading post-secondary institutions focused on digital media storytelling, has announced a partnership with Ubisoft at the opening of Ubisoft Toronto’s state of the art performance capture studio. Sheridan and Ubisoft have agreed to work together in defining joint research projects that will foster development of virtual production and performance capture techniques in Ontario and worldwide. In 2010, The Centre for Skills Development & Training in Ontario launched “Summer in Smallywood,” the online game-based training tool developed by Untold Entertainment that helps young employees enhance their workplace skills. Much has been said about Canada’s progressive business environment removing the glass ceiling for women in the workplace. But are our corner offices any more accessible for women today than they have been in the past? According to the findings of the recent Women in Leadership survey of 500 female managers and executives, conducted by Ipsos-Reid on behalf of Randstad Canada in late June, there are still many obstacles that women need to overcome in the workplace when striving to reach the managerial and executive ranks.
