Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize For Nonfiction Nominees Announced

writers trustThe Writers’ Trust of Canada announced today the five finalists for this year’s Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction, the richest annual literary award for a book of nonfiction published in Canada. SIGGRAPH 2014 Early Bird Rate For Exhibit Space Ends September 3rd

Vancouver SIGGRAPH ChapterSIGGRAPH 2014 will take place next 12-14 August in Vancouver, and if you book your space now, you’ll pay only $37.00 USD per square foot with a 10% deposit due on booking. The price goes up on September 4th to $38.00 per square foot, and a 50% deposit will be required to secure your space if you apply after September 12th. Exhibit applications submitted after February 15, 2014 will require payment in full. SIGGRAPH 2014 in Vancouver is an incredible marketing opportunity for Canadian companies – this is your chance to show off Canadian talent and innovation to a global audience – on our own turf. So what’s an OrcaJam? Simply put, it’s an event where a group of like-minded people get together and work on what they love; making games for 48 hours straight. Programmers, artists, audio engineers, board game designers… anyone interested in game development is welcome. PyCon 2014 Call For Proposals

pycon 2014On the heels of yet another sold out success in PyCon 2013, the conference organizers are happy to announce the new website and Call for Proposals for PyCon 2014. The new site is now live and accepting talk, tutorial, and poster proposals for the April 9-17 2014 conference taking place in Montréal. The first time north of the border brings a change to the call: lightning talk proposals are now being accepted in advance. PyCon’s first trip into Canada, not to be confused with PyCon Canada, ventures into Quebec for a great week at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, in the Old Montréal area. Unlike years past, the conference center isn’t tied to a specific hotel, so the organizers have currently worked out group rates with the Hyatt Regency and Westin hotels in Montréal. Canadian Gaming Association Disappointed By Inaction Of Senate On Bill C290

Canadian Gaming AssociationThe Canadian Gaming Association (CGA) is expressing both frustration and disappointment that the Senate chose not to deal with Bill C290 – An Act to Amend the Criminal Code – Sports Betting, before rising for the summer recess. Bill C290 was already passed with all-party support in the House of Commons, and has the additional backing of nine provinces. The CGA, together with provincial lottery corporations and leaders in the Canadian Gaming industry, had hoped that the Senate would work together to approve a private members bill that would give Canadians a better option than turning to illegal bookmakers or offshore operators to place bets.
