Women In View On TV Report Shows Scarcity Of Women Creating Content For Canadian Television

women In viewCanadian women are significantly underrepresented in key creative and content-creating roles in Canada’s TV production industry. This means the stories and values communicated through the influential and far-reaching medium of television are badly skewed, according to a report released today by non-profit organization Women in View. In its report Women in View on TV 2013, the organization examined 21 Canadian live action television series, which, in 2010-2011, received a total of $99.1 million in public funding by the government’s Canada Media Fund. Productions examined include Being Erica, Flashpoint, The Listener, Rookie Blue, Republic of Doyle, The Borgias, Heartland, Murdoch Mysteries, Hiccups, Lost Girl, and Little Mosque on the Prairie. Canadian Video Game Industry Contributes $2.3 Billion to GDP – A Critical Component of New Digital Economy and Source of National Pride

ESACIn a keynote address at the Ottawa International Game Conference (OIGC), Jayson Hilchie, President & CEO of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) today unveiled new research about the Canadian video game industry. The research shows that Canada’s overall video game industry is still growing at a moderate pace, even as the sector and its business models continue to evolve. Unveiling top-line results from new research conducted by Nordicity for ESAC, Hilchie showed that Canada’s 329 video game studios are a critical component of this country’s new digital economy generating over $2.3 billion in GDP for the Canadian economy in 2012. Milk Carton 2.0: Digital Innovations Transform The Search For Missing Children In Canada

Missing Children Society of CanadaIn 2012, The Missing Children Society of Canada (MCSC) introduced The World’s Most Valuable Social Network – the first online search party that allows Canadians to “donate” their Facebook or Twitter newsfeed as a vehicle for raising awareness when a child goes missing. The World’s Most Valuable Social Network has assisted in the safe return of six missing children since its launch, and the tool is expanding to include Pinterest and Foursquare in the search for missing children. Up to 50,000 children are reported missing in Canada every year. Today, leading up to International Missing Children’s Day (May 25th), MCSC is expanding The Most Valuable Project with the launch of two new digital tools: Most Valuable Check-In and Most Valuable Pinboard. ITAC Ingenious Awards Program Seeks Excellence In The Use Of Information And Communications Technology

itacThe Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) will celebrate the achievements of Canadian organizations that have demonstrated excellence and innovation in their use of information and communications technology (ICT) with the 2013 edition of its Ingenious Awards Program, which opened its call for nominations today. The program celebrates enterprises demonstrating measurable evidence of productivity improvement, efficiency gains, revenue growth, overall business transformation or other organizational outcomes through the use of technology. Organizations may nominate themselves or be nominated by others. The nominations process runs from May 15 to July 15, 2013. 2nd Annual Feminists in Games Workshop – Vancouver

feminists in gamesFem­i­nists in Games, funded by a Cana­dian SSHRC Grant is an endeavor cre­ated with the pur­pose of assem­bling an inter­na­tional research asso­ci­a­tion of dig­i­tal media researchers from a full range of salient dis­ci­plines to begin build­ing ‘con­nec­tive tis­sue’ between and among them, so as to bet­ter under­stand the ori­gins and con­se­quences of this gen­dered dig­i­tal divide, and inter­vene in its reproduction. In the group’s second annual workshop, which will be held at the Centre For Digital Media this May 31st and June 1st, attendees will have two full days of panels, presentations and discussions on issues which impact women in technology and development.
