Congratulations to the 8 finalists for this year’s Pitch 360, which will take place during Merging Media 2011 on October 28th at SFU Woodwards in Vancouver. The MindShare Learning Report eMagazine and supporting sponsors have officially launched the 4th Annual MindShare Learning Report™ 21st Century Classroom Video Challenge. The contest challenges Canadian K-12 teachers (from publicly funded schools) to create and upload a 3-5 minute video showcasing their best practices teaching with technology to engage students and enhance learning outcomes. Submissions will be accepted until midnight EST on Friday, December 16, 2011.
The official announcement of the 2011/12 three “Grand Prize Winners” will be on February 1, 2012. Each winner will receive a classroom technology prize package valued at over $15,000 for their school.

Attention Canadian developers: US-based Zoo Entertainment, Inc. subsidiary indiePub has announced its 2012 Independent Propeller Awards video game development competition to be presented during the 2012 South by Southwest (SXSW) ScreenBurn Arcade in Austin, Texas.
indiePub will award $50,000 in total cash prizes including $25,000 to a Grand Prize winner and $5,000 to the winner of each individual category: Best Art, Best Audio, Best Design, Technical Excellence and Mobile Game. The winning games will also be demonstrated March 9 through 11, 2012, in indiePub’s SXSW Interactive ScreenBurn Arcade booth located in the Austin Convention Center. Mobile game developer XMG Studio and the National Post tested Canada’s students at the Great Canadian Appathon2 (GCA2) mobile video game coding marathon, on their design creativity and development prowess. Canadian speedcubers are ready to show their speed at the biannual Rubik’s World Championship, which kicks off on October 14th in Bangkok, Thailand. The 3-day event will be held at Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand’s tallest and most scenic hotel. At the prestigious event 350 competitors from 40 countries will face off, among them many world record holders and national champions.
The 6th Rubik World Championship is considered to be the largest meeting of the Grandmasters of the cube. During the 3 days the speedcubers are competing for more than 24,000 euros total in 19 official events. The most anticipated event is the 3x3x3 and many are anticipating a new world record. People are placing their bet on Feliks Zemdegs from Australia who shocked the world with a 5.66 second world record this year at the Melbourne Winter Open. Read the rest of this entry »

Each year, an independent international jury, consisting of nineteen members, judges the entries in nine different categories, submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all corners of the world. This year’s competition attracted 5,691 photographers from 125 countries. In total 108,059 images were entered in the contest. The exhibition is comprised of 177 photographs and is free and open to the public.
The World Press Photo Exhibition will be on display from October 5 to 26, 2011 in the Allen Lambert Galleria at Brookfield Place in Toronto. This traveling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography and is brought to Toronto with the support of Brookfield Place. 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the exhibition at Brookfield Place.

“What does home mean to you?” From October 3 to November 14, Genworth Financial Mortgage Insurance Company Canada (Genworth Financial Canada) is inviting grade 4, 5 and 6 students across Canada to submit a written essay about the meaning of home.
Genworth Financial Canada’s 5th Annual Meaning of Home Contest supports Habitat for Humanity Canada (“Habitat for Humanity”) and is intended to raise awareness among students on the importance of having a home.
