It’s a new year. Why not start it off with a new “U”? The retail version of Wii Fit U for Wii U hits stores today, just in time to help people get started on their New Year’s resolutions to be more active and get fit. But Wii Fit U doesn’t require heavy equipment or expensive gym memberships. With Wii Fit U, users can get active by navigating a luge course, spraying a water hose, bouncing on a giant trampoline and even grabbing the new Fit Meter to continue their workouts on the go. There were some announcements in today’s Nintendo Direct that made me smile – two of my favourite characters are coming to the Wii U. I am very much looking forward to Donkey Kong’s new title, Tropical Freeze, as well as Yoshi’s New Island. Plus – one of Nintendo’s popular characters from the recently released Super Mario 3D World game is coming to two of its biggest titles of 2014 for Wii U. Rosalina will be playable in both Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. Nintendo also launched NES Remix in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U, re-imagining parts of 16 classic NES games. Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. has announced that the company’s worldwide sensation – DanceDanceRevolution – will move its way into Edmonton schools with the Canadian debut of DanceDanceRevolution Classroom Edition, a PC based DanceDanceRevolution game developed specifically for schools and fitness classes. The interactive game is part of the Edmonton Catholic School District’s Transformation Initiative and will be used in classrooms as part of the Active Exergaming Project. A December system update for the Nintendo 3DS portable system will allow users to combine their Nintendo eShop account balance for both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Nintendo announced the news during a Nintendo Direct video released earlier today. After the Nintendo 3DS system update, users can register their Nintendo Network ID for Wii U on their Nintendo 3DS systems and combine Nintendo eShop account balances. This will enable them to purchase Wii U software using the remaining balance on their Nintendo 3DS eShop accounts, and vice versa. Nintendo is giving Wii U owners the chance to get fit for free. Starting November 1, Wii U owners who own a Wii Balance Board accessory and have access to a broadband Internet connection will be able to download a free trial version of Wii Fit U from the Nintendo eShop. The trial software is not an abbreviated version of the game – it’s the full Wii Fit U experience. via Xbox Wire: The Xbox team reached another milestone today with the introduction of Xbox Fitness. This will be a new online service built exclusively for Xbox One that takes the world’s most popular fitness videos and makes them interactive. The extensive library of videos from the world’s biggest fitness brands including Beachbody’s P90X® (Tony Horton) and INSANITY® (Shaun T), Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson and others, will be available for free with Xbox Live Gold memberships through December 2014.
