In anticipation of the July 31 release of Columbia Pictures’ and Sony Pictures Animation’s 3D hybrid live-action/animated family comedy The Smurfs™ 2, Ubisoft® has announced that the company will develop and publish a video game based on the film. Developed by Ubisoft and WayForward, the game will be released as an action-adventure platformer game for the Xbox 360®, PlayStation®3, Wii™ and Wii U™, as well as an interactive storytelling book and collection of mini-games on Nintendo DS™. Calgary’s Sage Board Games has announced the release of Reiner Knizia’s Tigris & Euphrates onto iOS and now Google Play. Tigris & Euphrates is one of the most well-known board games in the genre, having won the prestigious 1997 Meeples’ Choice Award, 1998 Deutscher Spiele Preis Best Family/Adult Game Winner and 1998 Spiel des Jahres Recommended. It is also widely considered to be Reiner Knizia’s masterpiece. The European-style game relies heavily on strategy and player interaction and was well received on iOS devices. Wiggles 3D Games has announced the launch of their new mobile game, Lexigo for iOS devices. Based on the studio’s tabletop game Lexigo, the Lexigo app is built for 2 to 4 players, combining spelling challenges with strategy. Players use six-sided tiles to spell words in a twisty path, enabling the ability to move in six different directions – you can even backtrack to use letters more than once in the same word. The makers of Pipe Trouble, a game pulled from public broadcaster TVO‘s website under severe pressure by media and industry, say their game has been the victim of rampant misinformation and unfairly branded by critics as being an advocate for eco-terrorism. Pop Sandbox, which produced Pipe Trouble, says the game is clearly intended as over-the-top satire — and an engagement tool — that promotes a balanced approach to natural gas development. The game was created to drive awareness about the Six Island Productions documentary film Trouble in the Peace, and prompt a larger discussion surrounding natural gas production. Sprightly Software has announced the release of Accordion Solitaire 1.0 for iPad, the latest in Sprightly’s series of solitaire games for iOS. Players work their way through a 52-card deck by matching cards of the same suit or same number. Cards can be matched if they are beside each other or three cards from each other. The goal of the game is to clear as many cards as possible. Although easy to play, it can be hard to win. Players must use their creativity and planning skills to master this game.
