TechFest, Burnaby @ BCIT
Apr 28 @ 8:00 am – Apr 28 @ 5:00 pm
http://www.vancouvertechfest.ca/Home.aspx
So what is a TechFest?
1. By and For the Community -TechFests are about the community at large. They are meant to be a place for developers AND IT Professionals to come and learn from their peers. Topics are always based on community interest and never determined by anyone other than the community.

2. Always Free – TechFests are always free for attendees.

3. Community Developed Material – The success of the TechFest’s is that they are based on community content. All content that is delivered is original. All presentation content must be provided (including any code and your slide decks). If you have content you don’t want to share or provide to attendees then the TechFest is not the place for you.

4. No Fluff – TechFests are about getting to the nitty gritty. Refer to rule #1 if you have any questions on this.

5. Community Ownership – The most important element of the TechFest is always the community. All are welcome to attend and speak and do so without expectation of payment or any other compensation other than their participation in the community.

6. Never occur during work hours – We need to understand that many times people can’t leave work for a day or two to attend training or even seminars. The beauty of the TechFest is that they always occur on weekends.

Adaptive Web Design, Vancouver @ tbc
May 9 @ 9:00 am – May 9 @ 5:00 pm

Adaptive Web Design

More information on this event will be available on March 7th

For years, designers and developers have griped about the difficulties they’ve encountered in supporting a handful desktop browsers, but with mobile web usage on the rise, we now have to deal with an even more fragmented browser landscape. Phones, tablets, media players and video game systems—each device (and in some cases each browser on each device) has its own dimensions, quirks and capabilities. It makes my brain hurt just thinking about it.

Thankfully, supporting mobile—and providing better support for desktop browsers and assistive technologies—doesn’t have to be a painful experience. In this workshop, Aaron Gustafson will introduce you to the concept of Progressive Enhancement and demonstrate why it is the way forward for web design, whether on the desktop or in your hand.

What will you learn?

Aaron will teach you everything you need to know about modern web design with Progressive Enhancement. Whether you are a novice or an experienced professional, you will walk away from this workshop with a greater understanding of what Progressive Enhancement is and how to implement this philosophy in your own work. During the course of the day, you’ll:

  • Come to a greater understanding of semantic markup, including the improved semantics of HTML5
  • Become more familiar with how CSS parsers work and how you can use their logic to apply advanced CSS (including CSS3) in a layered fashion
  • See where concepts like “mobile first” and ”responsive design” fit in with Progressive Enhancement and your workflow
  • Learn how to wield the awesome power of JavaScript wisely, while keeping a watchful eye on how it can affect the user experience or your sites
  • See how accessibility concerns can be easily factored into your development process
  • Gain exposure to ARIA roles and states and learn how you can employ them to improve the experience of those using assistive technologies

What should you bring?

To get the most out of this workshop, come prepared to get out of your chair, discuss, debate, sketch, and collaborate on the redesign of a real web page using the techniques Aaron covers. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring a pen and some paper, but you probably won’t need to take notes as the slides will be provided for you. If you want to bring a computing device along, it could be helpful for playing along with some of the code examples, but is by no means necessary.

What should you know?

Ideally, you’ll have a decent understanding of the basic technologies used to build a website—HTML, CSS & JavaScript—but you’re technical knowledge doesn’t need to be deep in each of those areas. This workshop has a little something for everyone, whether you are a user experience designer or a hardcore backend developer. Regardless of your experience, you’ll walk away with tons of great ideas you can put to use in your own projects.

Landlord Web Conference, Brampton @ Pearson Convention Centre
May 10 – May 11 all-day

Landlord Web Solutions is pleased to announce Landlord Web Con 2012. The team is already in the planning stages for the event, which is shaping up to be an even bigger and more comprehensive event than last year.

Surveys from last year’s event indicated that there was a varying degree of familiarity with Internet marketing among landlords. So, this year’s event will be separated into two streams – intermediate and advanced. Intermediate presentations will introduce landlords to a topic and/or provide an overall view of how Internet marketing can be applied in the industry, while the advanced presentations will dive deeper into a subject, providing implementation suggestions and/or in-depth explanations of various Internet marketing strategies.

The conference will again take place at the Pearson Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario, on May 10, 2012. For guests arriving from out of town, the Hilton Garden Inn is now fully built, and is located right next door to the conference centre, which will provide added convenience.

The planning team is now accepting sponsorship requests. Any supplier interested in sponsoring can contact Jason Leonard at (905) 397-5088.

Any landlords who is interested in speaking at this year’s event can email Carissa Drohan at cdrohan@landlordwebsolutions.com.

Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) Conference, Canmore @ Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre
May 14 @ 8:00 am – May 14 @ 6:00 pm

http://cnie.nipissingu.ca/indexen.html

CNIE connects educators, administrators and practitioners in a bilingual, pan Canadian network. Our group promotes research and advances practice in both open and distance education and the use of educational technologies. CNIE addresses all educational contexts, including K-12, post-secondary, and private sector.

If you are a 21st century digital leader who is committed to innovative, sustainable, and flexible education, come to Canmore, Alberta for the CNIE-RCIÉ’s Green Aware conference to be held on May 14-16, 2012. Whether you are a teacher, a researcher, a media specialist, an instructional designer, or an administrator, a May visit to Canmore, located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is the place to be.

The idea of green has long been associated with protection of our environment and well it should. As green is the prime color of the world and, according to some, green is that from “which [the earth’s] loveliness arises” (Pedro Calderon de la Barca), it makes sense that green is associated with healing, freshness, endurance, and safety.

Green Aware as the theme of this year’s CNIE-RCIÉ conference challenges us to think about education in green ways: as something we must protect to ensure quality, inclusiveness, and access for both learners and teachers.  Given that the “tie that binds” CNIE-RCIÉ members is use of educational technology in learning situations, this year’s conference is about  sharing practices, research findings, and applications that contribute to one or more of the following three sub-themes:

  • Educational Innovation
  • Sustainable Education
  • Flexible Teaching and Learning

Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) Conference, Canmore @ Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre
May 16 @ 8:00 am – May 16 @ 6:00 pm

http://cnie.nipissingu.ca/indexen.html

Connected Canada, Calgary @ Calgary Science School
May 25 @ 8:00 am – May 25 @ 5:00 pm

Event Information

Connected Canada (#ConnectedCA) will be happening on May 25-27, 2012 at the Calgary Science School (you can register here).  This will be a conference that is significantly different from many that are being offered with a focus on creating connections and conversations on things happening in the world of education.  We really hope that people from around Canada (our friends outside of the country are more than welcome!) will join in on these conversations, and continue to build connections long after the conference.  There is also an opportunity to check out the classrooms of a very innovative school and bring ideas back to your own classrooms.  Here are some reasons why you should attend:

  1. Face-to-face is better – There are many great conversations that are happening through social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks on the Internet, but the chance to sit and talk to each other is something that we should always take advantage of when the opportunity arises.  Admittedly, a lot of learning happens at these types of conferences outside the sessions through informal conversation.
  2. You are part of the conversation – There are people from around Canada that are committed to sharing their work but we all know that no one is “smarter than the room”.  Conversations are meant to be interactive with participants also sharing their successes and struggles.  We can all learn from each other and the format of the conference is meant to take advantage of that idea.
  3. No expensive keynotes – Okay…so many people might not see this as an advantage, but we wanted to provide an opportunity for educators to learn from other practicing educators.  We did our best to keep this 3 day event as cheap as possible, treat participants great, and give a valuable, connected learning experience.  Keynotes can definitely be hit or miss so we wanted to keep the speaking to a minimal so that you are a part of the conversation! (See #2)  Not one person is being paid for this event; we are there to support education and educators in Canada.
  4. See classrooms in action! –  Often we hear of some great ideas that do not seem feasible in the classroom.  On the first day of the conference, participants will have the opportunity to visit classrooms and see innovative teaching and learning as it happens.  We are all better when we have the chance to learn with one another so we are hoping that seeing students and educators in action will spark some great conversations and learning for participants.
  5. It’s going to be fun! – This is the unspoken truth of many conferences.  The chance to learn from other educators is invaluable, but we also have to revel in the opportunities to get to know each other as people as well.  The chance to socialize with one another and take part in functions, tweetups, and more will help us to deepen in our relationships which are the foundation of our schools.  The chance to connect is so important and we plan to ensure that there is ample time and opportunity for this.
As we come into the final 6 weeks before the conference, we encourage you to register for this great event, and bring someone (at least one person, if not more!) who may not be “connected”.  The chance to see how social media can easily improve both online and offline relationships, facilitate deep conversations, and invigorate our passion for education and our students, is something that is amazing to see by those who do not see the value.  BRING A FRIEND!

We hope to see you in Calgary on May 25!

Ottawa Games Conference @ Ottawa Convention Centre
May 29 @ 8:00 am – May 29 @ 9:00 pm

First Annual Ottawa Game Conference

The one-day event, made possible with the support of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, will explore video games from the development and business perspectives, and will feature expert speakers from Ottawa and around the world.

“Ottawa has a surprisingly long history of game and interactive media development stretching back to the founding of Artech Studios in 1982. There are now over 200 game, animation and interactive media companies in town making worldwide brands and award-winning entertainment products. The conference is intended to strengthen the bonds between local firms and enhance our ability to compete globally,” said Scott Simpson, CEO, bitHeads & Playbrains.

Additional partners include:

  • Algonquin College
  • Export Development Corporation
  • Invest Ottawa
  • Interactive Ontario
  • Generator
  • Glitchsoft
  • Knowmads Inc.
  • Sylien Games
  • Ottawa Chapter of the International Game Developers Association

Sponsors include

  • Labarge Weinstein
  • RBC
  • Victory Arts

“Our sector doesn’t fit the traditional image of Ottawa high tech, which has focused on things like network infrastructure. It’s not a 9-5 industry and there’s continuous disruption. This is the next generation of Ottawa’s tech sector,” said Jean-Sylvain Sormany, president of Snowed in Studios.

The conference will include a gallery of concept art that showcases the creative process, presented by CanvasPop, and an evening reception celebrating innovation, including motion and thought-controlled games.

“Gaming was once considered a trend, or solely kids’ entertainment, but when we examine how it has permeated our daily lives and found a home on devices from consoles to PCs to mobile phones, it’s clear that it has become part of our cultural bedrock. This conference celebrates Ottawa’s role in the expansion and innovation of the gaming industry and facilitates our growth as a business community,” said Mike Burns, CEO, Fuel Industries.

Early bird registration is open now, with the early bird rate of $175.00 effective until April 29, 2012.

Responsive Enhancement, Vancouver @ tbc
Jun 5 @ 9:00 am – Jun 5 @ 5:00 pm

Responsive Enhancement

More information on this event will be available on April 4th

Responsive design is one of the most exciting developments to hit the web for some time. But there’s a common misconception that it involves merely slapping some media queries on to an existing desktop-centric site and labelling the result “mobile-friendly.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

What will you learn?

This workshop will help you to construct web sites that will feel natural on a whole range of devices, from mobile phones to tablets, laptops, e-readers and devices we haven’t even thought of yet. You’ll learn how to:

  • Ensure that no visitor is denied access to information.
  • Decide when to switch layouts using media queries.
  • Apply fluid layouts based on percentages.
  • Serve up different sized images for different environments .
  • Prioritise content.

What should you bring?

Bring some paper and a writing device (I find a pen works well). If you want to bring a laptop to play along with some of the code examples, you can but it isn’t necessary. I’ll give you all the slides and examples so don’t worry about frantically taking notes.

What should you know?

This workshop is aimed at both designers and developers (and if you’re a content strategist, there’s some good stuff for you too). There will be a healthy dollop of code (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) but it’s the concepts that really matter so don’t worry if you’re not that confident with development.

RTDNA National Conference, Toronto @ TBA
Jun 21 – Jun 22 all-day

Electronic journalism has come a long way since the 1900s. We have supplanted print as the way most people get their news, added pictures (and impact), and have transitioned into web-based media as well, extending our reach. We’ve brought war, peace and everything in between into people’s homes in an effort to make them better informed. We have a lot on which to pride ourselves!

Join us for RTDNA’s National Conference, June 21-23, 2012 in Toronto, Ontario and help us celebrate over 100 years of experimental and commercial electronic journalism. Find out where we’ve come from and our accomplishments as a medium along the way – those things will truly shape our future!
