The Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) has announced the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Out of the forty-seven applicants representing nine provinces, from Newfoundland to the Northwest Territories, five emerging writers have received the award; Katherine Di Marino, Elene Mekete, Lea Nakonechny, Ashley Park and Jon Wayne Brown. The fifth annual Toronto Screenwriting Conference takes place at Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Management on April 5 & 6, 2014. Each winner will receive a complimentary registration to the TSC as well as an exclusive lunch with representatives from Telefilm Canada, and TSC founder and president of Meridian Artists Literary Agency, Glenn Cockburn. Last Friday the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, invited Canadians to vote for their favourite apps from the 15 finalists of the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE). The developers of the app receiving the most votes will be awarded the “Fan Favourite” prize. Now considered the largest appathon in Canadian history, CODE saw over 900 participants from across the country compete to create an unprecedented 110 submissions using federal government data sets. The CODE appathon took place over the weekend of February 28 to March 2, when students, entrepreneurs, and Open Data enthusiasts tried their hand at turning federal Open Data into interesting and beneficial applications that can ultimately lead to a better quality of life for Canadians. On March 20, 2014, a total of six provincial regulators announced two main proposals for new Crowdfunding prospectus exemptions that would allow early stage companies such as start-ups and SMEs to raise up to $1.5 million of capital online through the issuance of securities. This represents a significant leap forward and positive progress for Crowdfunding advocates such as the National Crowdfunding Association of Canada (NCFA Canada), who has been working diligently with key industry stakeholders, government, regulators, media, eco-system partners and academia, since launching in October 2012, to provide education, research and valuable input into the development of a viable ‘made in Canada’ framework.  Read the rest of this entry »

CTV and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today that six-time JUNO Award winners Arcade Fire, rockers OneRepublic, and eight-time JUNO Award winner Sarah McLachlan, are the latest performers confirmed for CTV’s broadcast of The 2014 Juno Awards on March 30th. Leading the 2014 JUNO Award nominations with six, including Album of the Year, Arcade Fire, unable to attend The 2014 Juno Awards due to touring commitments, take part in broadcast via a taped performance.
