Crank Software WebKit Chosen To Power Nintendo Web Framework

Crank SoftwareOttawa-based embedded user interface (UI) solutions developer Crank Software has been selected by Nintendo to provide the WebKit technology that powers the Nintendo Web Framework. With Crank Software’s WebKit, web developers, in addition to traditional developers, can now use the Nintendo Web Framework to develop their newest games and applications on the Wii U system with the best technologies possible – including HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. In a recent analyst briefing, Nintendo stated that there has been tremendous interest in the new Nintendo Web Framework development environment.

Nintendo announced its Nintendo Web Framework in March of this year at GDC. It is a development environment based on WebKit technologies that supports software development on the Wii U system using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. The Nintendo Web Framework supports the Wii U GamePad controller, Wii Remote controllers, and JavaScript extensions such as video playback. Combining the Wii U GamePad, a TV screen, and the Internet, developers can use the Nintendo Web Framework powered by Crank Software’s WebKit to develop their web technology-based software.

“Our goal is to give developers the best tools possible so that they can create successful games and applications,” said Brian Edmond, Crank Software president. “With this WebKit for the Nintendo Web Framework, we were able to put the power of new technology like HTML5 in the hands of developers – and we look forward to seeing all of the games and applications they can create with the Nintendo Web Framework.”

With the custom WebKit for Nintendo, Crank Software maximized its proven embedded development tools, superior graphics, and optimization experience to benefit developers using the Nintendo Web Framework.

Crank Software was first known for its turnkey UI development software, Storyboard Suite. With Storyboard Suite, development teams save time and costs by having designers and engineers work side-by-side to ultimately create a better UI. Teams can develop, prototype, and refine a UI until it’s perfect for a customer – both in function and in design. Crank Software used its expertise helping engineers and designers create the best UIs possible to make Nintendo’s WebKit with exactly what the company needed – support for the latest tools and the ability for developers to create top-of-the-line applications faster and easier.
