City Of Markham Launches Access Markham Mobile Application

mini-orby [1]Markham’s new app provides instant mobile access to information on the City’s parks, recreation and library programs, waste collection programs and schedules, updates on major city projects, bikeway systems, culture and entertainment opportunities, our social media pages, and the City’s resident publication – Markham Life magazine. Additionally, the Apple application is enabled with emergency push notification capabilities.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti remarked, “The launch of our new portal website in 2011 put the platform in place for us to dramatically transform how we do business and serve our customers. Our mobile reflects this business transformation, and our ability to respond to the changing needs of residents.”

The Access Markham mobile application was built in partnership with Purple Forge [2], a provider of mobile applications to municipalities in Canada. In addition to the City of Markham, Purple Forge has developed and deployed proven and robust mobile applications for the cities of Ottawa, Calgary, Regina, Vancouver as well as Chinook Country Tourism and the Winnipeg Humane Society.

The push notification capabilities on the Apple app allow the city to make the app buzz in their citizen’s pockets in the event of important or emergency information becoming available. This feature has already been successfully used in emergency scenarios such as boil water and election advisories in the City of Regina and major traffic incidents and snowstorms in the City of Calgary.

“The City of Markham has taken the lead in developing a comprehensive multi-platform application to inform its citizens,” said John Craig, VP Sales and Marketing. “They have shown visionary leadership and are now better positioned to engage their citizens both in day-to-day and in crisis scenarios.”
