MPPIA Short Film Award Candidates Announced

movie orbyThe Motion Picture Production Industry Association of BC, British Columbia Film + Media  and the Whistler Film Festival are pleased to announce the five short-listed candidates who will compete for the MPPIA Short Film Award at the 2012 Whistler Film Festival this November 28 through December 2nd.  Based on an adjudication process administered by British Columbia Film + Media, the five finalists and their projects are:

 

  • Don’t Run Off the Trail, Johnny (Nan) Ma
  • True Love Waits, Jon Ornoy
  • Apocalypse Café, Scott Kukurudz
  • The Pertect Pair, Tyler Funk
  • Cougars Cruising, Brianne Nord-Stewart

This year’s finalists will compete before a jury of three industry professionals and an industry peer audience as part of the 2012 Summit at the Whistler Film Festival – Saturday December 1 at 10:30 am. The Award provides the successful filmmaker with a $15,000 cash award plus resources ‘in-kind’ valued up to $100,000 to complete the proposed short film project. The winner will be announced at the Festival’s Awards Brunch on Sunday December 2, 2012 and the completed film will have its world premiere at the 2013 Whistler Film Festival.

The five candidates were announced at the Rio Theatre during a special launch event celebrating the 6th anniversary of this valuable emerging director award. To date, 25 BC filmmakers from a field of more than 100 applicants have participated in the award pitch competition. Five short films have been successfully completed, including the anticipated 2011/12 winner Beauty Mark (Mark Ratzlaff, director) set to have its world premiere at the 2012 Whistler Film Festival Saturday December 1 at 2 pm.

The Whistler Film Festival lineup and film schedule are now available online with tickets on sale until December 2nd. The Festival Box Office is open for phone sales and on November 22nd for walk-in sales. Best accommodation rates are also available starting from $79 per night until November 8th.
