The Voice: 2012 BC Technology Report Card

bctia [1]The BCTIA [1], together with DigiBC [2], Cleantech CEO Alliance and Wavefront [3], collaborated with KPMG [4] to prepare a Technology Report Card for British Columbia. On the heels of the Jenkins report last fall and the innovation agenda put forth in the recent federal budget, our intent was to examine the performance of the technology industry in our own province. We asked KPMG to assess the industry performance over the past decade in the context of the BC economy and in comparison to tech sectors in other regions.

The result was KPMG’s 2012 BC Technology Report Card [5], a comprehensive study that spotlights the performance of BC’s technology sector squarely in front of all British Columbians. It clearly shows that technology has emerged as a cornerstone of the provincial economy, performing well in relation to other sectors and contributing significantly to gross domestic product (GDP) growth and job creation.

As the third largest private sector contributor to BC’s GDP and as the fastest growing export sector, our technology industry has much to celebrate.

However, the data also shows that compared to technology industries in other jurisdictions in Canada, we are under-performing. Our relatively weak competitive metrics should be taken as a wake-up call and a clear message that to build BC’s technology industry we must engage in a higher level of collaborative thinking, strategic planning, and targeted action.

The reality is…we need to raise our game, BC. To do this, your ideas and suggestions [6] on what our industry can and should do to accelerate our global competitive position are invited.

If you didn’t click the immediately preceding link, and you are involved in BC’s Technology Industry, >Click Here [6]< and be pro-active by offering your thoughts, ideas and suggestions for the future.
