Best Buy’s Tech it Away Program Collects More Than 42,000 Pounds of e-Waste

Best Buy CanadaBest Buy Canada teamed up with nine communities in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto to help collect and recycle electronic waste as part of the Tech it Away program this year. As a result of this one-day event, the stores collected more than 42,000 pounds of e-waste from local residents, with TV and computer monitors making up the majority of items returned.

Best Buy stores in BC are expanding the electronics recycling program year-round through the BC Return To Recycle Program. Customers are now able to bring in their electronic waste to any BC store at any time during the year for safe recycling. Stores in Alberta and Ontario already have this program in place and it will continue to grow and expand to all markets in Canada.tech it away

The results of this year’s Tech it Away events come in just as Best Buy has been recognized as one of Canada’s top 50 most socially responsible companies as part of the 2012 Maclean’s Sustainalytics list. Best Buy was recognized for both Best Buy for Kids programs which help to support organizations that strive to empower youth by helping them succeed in school, engage in communities and develop life and leadership skills.

Here’s a look at some of the e-waste that was collected for safe recycling at this year’s event:

  • 27,000 lbs of computer and TV monitors
  • 11,000 lbs of printers and computing accessories
  • 1000 lbs of small appliances
  • 3000 lbs peripherals and accessories
