Three Teams Named Winners of AppsforHealth 2012 Challenge

mohawk collegeWith 100 industry professionals from over 20 attending organizations, and more than 60 students from colleges and universities from across Ontario, Mohawk College’s second annual AppsforHealth event was a much anticipated success. The two-day event provided students and professionals with the opportunity to interact and discuss varying perspectives on industry-related issues in relations to current technology. While participants were fully engaged in the panel sessions and open discussions, the heart of the event was the student challenge.

Students were able to choose from 9 proposed challenges, each of which demanded a solution that would integrate new emerging technologies as a means to either alleviate pressing problems or help develop current trends in the health care industry. All participating students were encouraged, but not required, to form interdisciplinary teams in order to approach the chosen challenge from various perspectives.

Justin Fyfe, Software Architect at iDeaWORKS explains that the ultimate goal of the event was to have students from different faculties “cross pollinate ideas.” When fused, the different levels of expertise of healthcare training and software development would allow healthcare technology solutions to advance in such a way that the industry can tackle the issues at hand.

Participating students were judged based on the relevance, feasibility and cohesiveness of their presented solution. The winners of the AppsforHealth 2012 Challenge were:

  • 1st Place $3,000: Shivani Goyal & Joanne Wong (University of Toronto) for their solution to the youth with lupus challenge supported by SickKids.
  • 2nd Place $2,000: Kent Tsui (McMaster University), Gawain Tang (McMaster University) & Steven D’Costa (Ryerson University) for their solution to the electronic dermatology consultation challenge supported by the Hamilton Family Health Team.
  • 3rd Place $1,000: Lauren Harris (McMaster University), Adam Carriere (Mohawk College), Teresa Coutu (McMaster University), Leanne Fernandez (McMaster University), Lina Tirilis (Mohawk College) for their solution to supporting seniors with alternative living and long-term care planning challenge, supported by the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant CCAC.

AppsforHelath was coordinated by Duane Bender and Christy Taberner of Mohawk College and Mark Casselman of The Centre for Global eHealth Innovation.
