GTA Students Craft Their Vision for the Digital Society at CareerMash Youth Tech Jam

career mashMore than 250 high school students from across the Greater Toronto area (GTA) will discuss and select the most innovative ideas for how digital technologies can help solve some of the world’s greatest issues at the CareerMash Youth Tech Jam. The unique student tech event will be held at the Ontario Science Centre Friday, May 11 from 10:30 am to 1 pm.

Leading up to Friday’s big event, CareerMash hosted seven smaller Youth Tech Jams at southern Ontario schools and conferences throughout April. After an interactive presentation of ideas collected from the Youth Tech Jam series, students attending Friday’s Jam will vote on the best which will be sent to the 18th World Congress of Information Technology (WCIT 2012) being held in Montreal in October.

The Youth Tech Jam brainstorming series and essay contest, which closes June 30, are part of a partnership between CareerMash and WCIT 2012. Up to 3,000 delegates from 80 countries will meet at WCIT 2012 to develop a Digital Society Action Plan to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges and shape the future of information technologies (IT) and the digital society.

The best ideas from the CareerMash Youth Tech Jam essay contest will win trips to WCIT 2012 for two students – one winner and one runner up. The winner will be a featured panelist on WCIT’s Global Young Innovators Panel to present his or her essay to some of the world’s top employers in the technology industry.

Friday’s CareerMash Youth Tech Jam will also include a presentation on how tech can be mashed up with careers in any industry and exhibitor booths on career opportunities from CareerMash corporate members such as Bell Canada, Scotiabank and CGI. Keynote speaker will be Geneviève L’Espérance – a 19-year-old one-woman powerhouse for all things tech who wants to take Fem Geek global, especially to women in developing countries.

The CareerMash Youth Tech Jam series is a warm up to June’s WCIT 2012 World Tech Jam. The WCIT 2012 Jam is a massive 72-hour online brainstorming session with thousands of contributors around the world sharing new ideas, innovations, and actions for a Digital Agenda that the IT sector can adopt to address global challenges.

Cool digital technologies are bringing new innovations to all fields, such as the environment, health care, entertainment, shopping, mobility and more. As an educational tech career resource, CareerMash has organized the Youth Tech Jam series to inspire students to think creatively about the many ways tech might solve issues in the digital society and the roles they could play through tech careers. CareerMash also spreads the word about the endless possibilities of today’s high-paying, in-demand tech careers to young people, educators and parents through its website.

“With CareerMash events like the Youth Tech Jam and our career website we’re working to excite students and make them aware that today’s tech career mash ups are far more interesting, fun, cool and creative than they think,” says David Ticoll, executive director, of the Canadian Coalition for Tomorrow’s ICT Skills (CCICT). CareerMash is a CCICT program. “When we dispel the myth of boring, desk-bound tech jobs, more young people – including young women – will opt for exciting tech-related opportunities that will enable Canada to be a leader in the 21st century knowledge economy.”
