500px Launches Android App

[1]500px [1], a Toronto-based platform and community for sharing, discovering, and selling great photographs, announced today the launch of its first ever free Android [2] smartphone and tablet application. Additionally they also released a major upgrade to their highly acclaimed iPad [3] application which now features retina graphics support for the latest iPad as well as in-app purchase capability.

The new Android app brings the same elegant experience of the site to Android users worldwide. Browse through the millions of photos in a magazine-like stream and curated collections, or sign in for free and join the community. Follow friends’ photos, rate and add photos to favorites, and share comments directly in the app. Create a slideshow with a few clicks and easily share photos on Twitter and Facebook, all directly within the Android app.

With 500px, artists, enthusiasts, amateurs and professionals have a beautiful place to store and showcase their work, a fast-growing community to engage with and be discovered by, and an easy-to-use marketplace for selling and buying digital prints and gallery-grade canvases instantly.

“With 500px we’ve organically built a community of passionate photographers and enthusiasts alike who discover, publish, share, buy and sell thousands of inspiring photographs every day. We’re thrilled to be able to now share that experience with the Android community,” said Oleg Gutsol, CEO and co-founder of 500px. “We’re in the midst of a movement to reinvent the experience of photography and culture on mobile devices. The way we take photos, and what we use to take them, is evolving. The way we showcase and consume photos must follow. With our site and applications, everyone can be an artist or a curator or both, through any medium.”

In shoring up their mobile offerings, 500px also announced today a new set of features and functionalities for their popular iPad app. The revamped iPad app, available now, will support retina graphics allowing users to enjoy 500px photos in crisp, stunning high resolution on the retina iPad. It will also feature a new darker interface and native Twitter support. Most importantly, the app will now power in-app purchases, so users can access the 35k Stores and over 300k photos for sale in the Marketplace and bring beautiful photographs they discover home with just a few swipes.

The iPad app, which received over 100k downloads in its first week released, is the perfect medium for the 500px community to enjoy their photographs. On average, engagement time within the app is 42 minutes and garners 87 flips through the magazine-like pages of the app. Since launch, there have been over 300M pages flipped.

“Our community has spoken—they spend an incredible amount of time in the iPad app, over 40 minutes on average right now and accordingly, we will continue to make that experience even more engaging,“ said Evgeny Tchebotarev, COO and co-founder of 500px. “Not only can users now enjoy beautiful photos in the most beautiful interface possible, they can also purchase gallery-quality canvas prints from right within the app, instantly. It’s a new outlet for burgeoning artists to sell their work and a new way for users to bring art home.”

Housing over 6M photos, 500px continues to solidify themselves as the place to share and discover beautiful photographs. 500px recently launched a number of new offerings and tools for community enthusiasts including a new Plus plan that offers unlimited uploads, storage and collections, Market functionality and most importantly, advanced statistics on engagement for each and every photo for just $19.95/year. They also recently launched a new desktop uploader for OS X Lion to better service the 30k+ photos uploaded per day.
