Reminder – Trend Micro Video Contest Closes April 3rd

Trend Micro CanadaTrend Micro’s 3rd annual “What’s Your Story” video contest encourages young people to tell their stories about online safety. Teens, schools and other video enthusiasts have until April 3rd to submit their entries and everyone can view and vote for their favourite through April 17th.

The Contest’s three entry categories mirror the largest challenges to being safe online:  take action against bullying, keep a good rep online, and be cell smart. Canadian residents (outside of Quebec) aged 13 and older can create and submit a video of two minutes or less about how best to stay safe when engaging in online activities such as texting, instant messaging, or using social networking sites.

Unlike other video contests that rely on static and subjective criteria, “What’s Your Story” actively engages participants through an online review process. Video makers can share their submissions and encourage others to view and vote, which means voters also become active participants in the process. Only the highest-rated and most-viewed videos will be considered for prizes by the contest judges.

Trend Micro Internet Safety for Kids & Families has teamed with some of the world’s leading organizations that either provide access to kids online or advocate for their safety. The 2012 judging panel includes: Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, Common Sense Media and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Ontario.

“As technology continues to evolve, it is more important than ever for young people to understand the importance of protecting their privacy, and their right to control their own personal information. Encouraging youth to create videos is a wonderful way to spread this message,” said Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

Canada is one of the most connected countries on the planet and the highest percentages of regular online users are teens. According to Statistics Canada, close to 99 percent of teens living in Canada use online tools in their daily lives.

What’s Your Story 2012 will award a grand prize of $10,000.00 U.S. to the winning entry, with six cash category prizes (three awarded to schools per entry category and three awarded to individuals per entry category). Winners will be announced in May.
