New Speech Button App Gives Voice To Many

wipitupManitoba’s Wip It Up is proud to announce the launch of Speech Button, a new App now available in iTunes. Speech Button is an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app for children and adults who are non-verbal or who have difficulty speaking. It was born out of a collaboration of ideas between two practicing therapists from Winnipeg, Carole Conyers, a School Psychologist and Board Certified Behaviour Analyst and Speech-Language Pathologist Nancy Clarke-Shipman.
“It took a village to raise this App.  Not only are we proud of the software we have created, but we are equally proud of how Speech Button came to be!  Less than a year ago, after feeling frustrated by the lack of suitable apps for our clients with special needs, we decided to take a chance and create our own app. With the help of a small network of friends and family, Speech Button was born!” stated Carole Conyers.

Speech Button is a communication App that assists the users in communicating their basic wants and needs. Speech Button is comprehensive enough to be used as a primary communication system for some, or, as a springboard to a more complex system of speech generating applications in the future.

“Thinking back 15 years, when I entered the field of Speech-Language Pathology, I was always trying to find ways to integrate technology into my work,” said Nancy Clarke-Shipman. “Back then, though, we were limited to floppy disks and tape recorders. Fast forward to the present and we have unprecedented opportunities to use this current technology to help children and adults communicate better.”

Too many apps marketed to people with special needs have been created by computer techs who do not truly understand the needs of their users. Speech Button was developed by clinicians who work on a day-to-day basis with people with special needs, and thoroughly understand what this population requires in an app. Speech Button was created in response to a need for ready-made, easy-to-use apps that allow children and adults with special needs who are non-verbal or who have difficulty speaking to communicate and enjoy a better quality of life.
