Academy Award-winning Film Hugo Features Artistry Of Seneca Grads And Professors

senecaAs many of you already know, the Oscar® for Achievement in Visual Effects went to the film Hugo, which featured the work of Seneca graduates and professors. Six graduates and professors from Seneca College worked on Martin Scorsese’s 3D children’s adventure, including Professors Mahmoud Rahnama division computer graphics lead and Kenny Tam (division computer graphics supervisor) and graduates Tricia Kim (matchmove artist), John Dinh compositor, Karen Cheng (compositor), and Rickey Verma (compositor).

“We are delighted that Seneca graduates and faculty had the opportunity to showcase their talents in the Oscar®-winning film Hugo,” said David Agnew, Seneca President. “We’re very proud of the careers they have built and the successes they have achieved.”

All of the films nominated for an Academy Award® for Achievement in Visual Effects featured the artistry of a graduate or professor of Seneca’s Visual Effects for Film and Television program.

“The continued recognition by industry through vehicles like the Academy Awards® speaks volumes about the quality of Seneca graduates,” said Mark Jones, Chair of the School of Creative Arts and Animation. “Seneca has been offering programs in animation and visual effects for less than a decade, so we are very proud of the incredible success of so many of the projects that students, graduates and professors have been involved with.”

In the Visual Effects for Film and Television graduate certificate program, students are introduced to the various techniques used to create visual effects for film and television. Studies focus on the software tools used to create visual effects and issues involved in combining these effects with live action footage.

With 10 campuses across the Greater Toronto Area, Seneca offers degrees, diplomas and graduate certificates renowned for their quality and respected by employers. Combining the highest academic standards with practical, hands-on learning, expert teaching faculty and the latest technology ensures Seneca graduates are career-ready.
