EXFO Redefines WDM Testing and Network Optimization

exfo [1]EXFO Inc. [1] has announced the addition of WDM-Aware testing capabilities to its FTB-5240S/B-P Optical Spectrum Analyzers [2], together with additional industry-leading features such as referencing, on-graph peak detection level and SCPI commands. These newly launched capabilities provide leading network operators with the ability to address some of their biggest challenges, such as reducing OPEX, removing the uncertainty of test results, and testing right the first time.

In today’s competitive market, operators face network- and cost-related challenges stemming from a widespread phenomenon: the average revenue per user is decreasing, yet subscribers want more data, increasing bandwidth needs and affecting revenue. In response to this, the FTB-5240S/B-P OSA’s WDM-Aware offers the i-in-band mode—intelligent setups, optimized on a per-channel basis, which delivers accurate test results all automatically, all the time. WDM-Aware removes the uncertainty about test results, removes the guesswork, automates and speeds up tests, and thereby reduces OPEX. WDM-Aware is the most accurate and adaptive in-band method on the market.

Higher network speeds such as 40G also mean longer distances and wider channels, which weakens the channels and increases filtered noise. EXFO’s latest FTB-5240S/B-P software addition helps to clearly differentiate noise from signals and analyzes only what deserves to be analyzed: with the on-graph peak detection threshold line, there are no longer any false peak analyses or overlooked low-power peaks, making the FTB-5240S/B-P a powerful analysis tool that delivers extremely reliable results. Further, a deployed system ages over time and will continue to change during its life span. EXFO’s FTB-5240S/B-P OSA brings built-in referencing in WDM mode, which allows operators to see the original trace display—what it is today and what has changed—making it an essential troubleshooting tool.

Finally, the FTB-5240S/B-P Optical Spectrum Analyzer also enables remote access to test tools to meet the demands of network equipment manufacturers who require 24/7 testing, lab simulations and remote control. The latest SCPI command feature allows the stop-and-start of any kind of operation and the ability to fully configure the OSA remotely.

“The addition of these new optical spectrum analyzer test capabilities to our FTB-5240S/B-P demonstrates EXFO’s commitment to meeting the test needs of network operators,” said Etienne Gagnon, EXFO’s Vice-President—Wireline Division and Corporate Marketing. “We are pleased to provide our customers with these industry-leading spectral analysis tools that deliver reliable test results, powerful troubleshooting and analysis, as well as remote operation and control.”
