Top Canadian 2011 Searches from Bing Show a Year of Breakthroughs and Heartbreaks

Microsoft CanadaAccording to Canadian Bing searches, 2011 was the year of continued celebrity fascination, concern for human tragedy and new royalty. From rising stars and weddings to divorces and natural disasters, Bing has captured history through the searches that mark the year’s most important people and moments in time.

To coincide with the release of the U.S. search results for Bing, here are the top Canadian search queries Bing Canada Infographconducted on Bing, resulting in Canada’s top 10 lists for the most searched people, news stories, celebrity events, and consumer electronics.

Most-Searched Person of the Year

While Bieber Fever moved south this year taking the U.S.’s top spot, Canadians were enamoured with U.S. export and reality TV star Kim Kardashian, who topped the list as the person most searched by Canadians on Bing in 2011. Bieber’s popularity remains strong here in Canada – the young superstar secured ninth place in Canadian searches as the only Canadian in the top 10 list for both countries. While all things royal made a strong showing in 2011 across celebrity events and news stories, it was Pippa Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister, who cracked the Canadian top ten, coming in at number four on the most-searched person list. Her royal sister just missed the cut, coming in at number 12. Other Canadian celebrities of note included Shania Twain and Jack Layton who both made the top 50.

According to Bing, Canadians were preoccupied with weddings, divorces and babies in 2011. Starting the trend of extravagant weddings the top 10 celebrity events kicks off with the royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. Right behind was the celebrity version – Kim Kardashian’s fairy-tale wedding. Just outside of the top 10 was also Kim Kardashian’s divorce to her husband of 72 days. Keeping with the domestic theme, the top three couples based on Canadian Bing searches all have a little Canadian content – the future King of Canada, William and Catherine, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge topped the list. Canadian hockey star Mike Fisher and country music artist Carrie Underwood, and Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber and actress/singer Selena Gomez followed in second and third place respectively.
