Annual UNICEF Greeting Card Contest Open For Entries

Canadian children are invited to get in the holiday spirit by showcasing their artistic talents to help children worldwide by entering the Pier 1 Imports /Owlkids/UNICEF Greeting Card Contest. Children ages 14 and under can draw, paint or colour a picture illustrating this year’s “Peace on Earth” theme to win exciting prizes and have their design featured as UNICEF’s official 2012 greeting card.

“We’re pleased to once again kick off this exciting initiative with Pier 1 Imports and Owlkids,” says UNICEF Canada’s Chief Development Officer Dave Spedding. “This is the 7th annual competition in Canada with 100 per cent of proceeds supporting UNICEF’s work ensuring the most vulnerable children worldwide have opportunities to thrive in the future.”Last year's Pier 1 Imports /Owlkids/UNICEF winning greeting card design by 10-year-old Genice Chan from Vancouver

The winner of this year’s contest will be announced in January 2012 and will receive a $5,000 scholarship and $500 worth of art supplies for their school.  Visitors to the Pier 1 website can also take part by voting for four Fan’s Choice Awards between November 27 and December 3. Winners will receive Owlkids surprise gift packs.

Entry forms are available at all Pier 1 Imports stores nationwide while supplies last or online from pier 1, unicef or owl kids. All entries must be hand-drawn and received by Pier 1 Imports’ Corporate Headquarters by November 4th.  Submissions will be judged on artistic quality and creative interpretation of this year’s theme.

Last year’s contest winner was 13-year-old Genice Chan from Vancouver B.C. who received the grand prize for her heart warming interpretation of the theme “Making Spirits Bright” – a cheerful design of two children placing a shining star on top of a holiday tree. Along with having her design turned into a greeting card, Genice received a $5,000 scholarship and $500 worth of art supplies for her school.

The Pier 1 Imports/Owlkids/UNICEF Greeting Card Contest started in 2005 to raise awareness among Canadian school children about UNICEF’s important work for children around the world. It has inspired kids from coast to coast to use their creative talents in a meaningful way.  Pier 1 started selling UNICEF greeting cards in North America in 1985 and has raised more than $29 million to date.

Funds from the sale of cards support UNICEF programs that provide lifesaving medicines, vaccines, nutritious foods, primary education, clean water and sanitation as well as emergency relief for millions of children and women in more than 150 countries.
